The Seattle Mariners have acquired slugger Edwin Encarnacion from Cleveland, sending Carlos Santana back to the Indians as part of a three-team trade that also includes the Tampa Bay Rays, it was announced Thursday.
The Indians will receive first baseman Jake Bauers from the Rays, while Tampa Bay will get third baseman Yandy Diaz from Cleveland. The Indians also are sending minor league pitcher Cole Sulser to the Rays and the 77th pick in the 2019 competitive balance draft to the Mariners.
Encarnacion for Santana seems a wash, it is two older players with slugger skills swapping teams. Seattle got a lot of bang for their buck from Nelson Cruz, so they must hope that they repeat this fortune with Encarnacion.
Jake Bauers batted .201 /.316 /.384 as a 23 year old rookie, not the sort of stats you want from a firstbaseman, but Yandy Diaz may be the steal of the deal. He was an old rookie two seasons back, hasn't got power, has not played that much, but has shown good on base skills at every level. He is just now entering his prime and he is still a cheap player under team control.
He'll be with them for his age 33,34, & 35. I am surprised as well. From 2012-2015 he was one of the best in the game. His 2017 season was good but be surprised if he tops that.
I would've thought it would be more like a 2 year contract with some kind of option/buy out for the 3rd year. If you're the Phillies you have a young team that can compete in that division for awhile. Why put yourself in a position 2-3 seasons from now where you have less funds to go out and add important players to put you over the edge.
Granted, I think he can help the team a lot in 2019.
Well, you weren't getting him, or anyone else likely, on a 1 year deal..
Is this the solution to any problems? Not really. It's a warm body who can adequately do the job he's being brought in for.
I suspect he'll be around .250 with 25 home runs. when you consider he's replacing Carlos Santana, for all intents and purposes.. about the same for $10 million less, as Santana had a 3 year/60 million contract.
While Santana's BA was horrible last year, his OBP was still right around his career average. and, he'll be a good veteran voice in the locker room, I think. Not that Santana wasn't.
Is this a blockbuster move? One that wins them a World Series? no. Of course not. Is it a good, solid piece that makes the team better? Yes. Overspending? I don't really think so. Maybe a touch, but not Ryan Howard overspending territory.

The expectation seems to be that Seattle will flip Encarnacion shortly, since Seattle is in rebuild mode. It sounds like Seattle and Tampa Bay are talking about an Encarnacion trade.
Just like I never expected Carlos Santana to play a single game for the Mariners this year, I'll say the same thing about Edwin Encarnacion in a Mariners uniform.
But why Montreal? Maybe I'm not aware of certain things but they lost a team around 2004-2005. Why would thy deserve another one so soon?
Montreal is the only city in North America with full support from its community, local government, investors, etc. Tampa had until this month to provide proof of all three including plans for a new stadium. They failed miserably. I'd love for the team to move to Orlando but it would more of the same here. Remember, owners tricking cities into paying for stadiums in the US is over. The Rays owners can relocate the club to Montreal or just sell the team to investors there for a huge profit. Cant win in Florida, cant lose in Canada.

A team becomes available, I guarantee you Vegas will put in a strong push.
Whether MLB is ready to consider them is a totally different story. But, Vegas will make an effort.
Vegas has the same problem as Florida. Nobody is from there. Getting Dodger, Cubs, Red Sox, and Yankee/Mets fans to switch teams is not going to happen. If it was possible, Rays and Marlins game would be sold out every night.

Nobody's from DC, either. It took 20 years for Dan Snyder to destroy the Redskins fanbase. And the Nationals don't seem to overly have attendance problems.
Admittedly, football vs baseball is apples vs oranges.. Especially when you're trying to pull fans for 1 of 8 games vs 1 of 81.
Golden Knights pulled 103% capacity last year. Averaging over 18k per game. But.. Their arena is right on the strip. And they had an incredible season. They are still pulling the same basic numbers, and even a touch higher, so far this year. With out-friggin-rageous ticket prices. I was going to try to go to a game while I was there in October, but.. Coming from a place with a minor league (ECHL) hockey team where I can get rink-side seats for $20.. I was not paying $100+ for nosebleeds.
Vegas 51s (Excuse me, Aviators) are pulling 5000 per game. That's.. Probably not where I'd want to see a number before putting a team there, certainly. But.. Regardless. They will make a push.
Vegas, I think, has established that they can support sports teams. Can they support baseball? It's a valid question. I don't know the answer. But I do know they will try to get a team.
My hunch is, within ten years, Nashville gets a MLB team. Gigantic economic growth, lots of hqs or regional hqs= lots of suites sold before the stadium is built.
