I do think, with or w/o Bryce, SF will stink several more years.
Yeah, the Giants are latecomers to the metric revolution in the game and Zaidi is going to have to play catch up for a time. Miracles are possible, but it would take a lot of them to make the team competitive this coming season. What it feels like is a lost year, one where the transition is delayed by having Bochy doing his swan song. The dead weight contracts will start to clear after 2021 and Zaidi will have some payroll flexibility.
If they had Harper, his prime years would probably be wasted as he was surrounded by a non competitive team. Plus whatever they are calling the Giants stadium this year, it is a park which suppresses offense. The park in Washington ranked the third most friendly for hitters, while AT&T was second to last among 30 teams in allowing home runs. Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia was the 12th most hitter friendly in terms of scoring runs, but the third most home run friendly.
I will miss him but I wish him well, except when he plays against his old team (beat up on the Mets Bryce!).
Anyway, I could not see paying him that kind of money. DC has two franchises that are currently hamstrung by injured albatrosses. We don't need a third.

Take care Bryce. Thanks for the memories.
Yeah too long and too much money with potential of being a financial "paperweight" at that type contract length IMO.
In my opinion players (from all teams) rarely improve when they have a heavy wallet in their back pocket!
Sure a Lebron or Big Papi fills seats to see them excel but Harper/Machado have not been those guys! Memorable Machado moment in 2018 was him striking out at his knees to lose the world series. He had a bad attitude as a lower paid player, I can't imagine him with the 300mm ego!
Yes, they did. I was uneasy when I saw that my Dodgers were negotiating.
The Phillies must be pretty confident that the DL is coming to the National League.
ESPN segment just ended with the reporters screaming that Harper was an idiot for not taking the $180 million for 4 years with the Dodgers and betting on himself again in free agency at age 30.
