Oh, but then again, the Astros have 162 games to put both teams back in their places.
Until the rest of the AL West starts playing, we can't calculate the Mariners' magic number.

.
Goldy is, IMO, MLB's 2nd best position player, behind Trout. But I still think Cards are mediocre, at least in 2019.

I do think Braves though may be better than expected.

The metrics may be interpreted to support the above. Among all players who have eight full seasons under their belts, Goldschmidt is second behind Trout with 40.3 WAR. Everyone on the list between Goldschmidt and Trout has played at least ten seasons. Of course Trout is off on his own planet, WAR wise, with 64.2.
The active leaders: (number of full seasons played in brackets)
1. Albert Pujols (18) 99.9
2. Miguel Cabrera (16 ) 69.6
3. Robinson Cano (14) 69.3
4. Mike Trout (8) 64.2
5. Joey Votto (12, ) 58.7
6. Ian Kinsler (13 ) 57.5
7. Dustin Pedroia (13) 52.1
8. Evan Longoria (11) 51.8
9. David Wright (14) 50.4
10. Curtis Granderson (15 ) 47.8
11. Ryan Braun (12 ) 46.4
12. Ben Zobrist (13 ) 45.3
13. Troy Tulowitzki (12 ) 44.2
14. Andrew McCutchen (10 ) 42.1
15. Buster Posey (10 ) 41.1
16. Paul Goldschmidt (8 ) 40.3
17. Giancarlo Stanton (9 ) 39.5

I do not have a position on how the Cardinals will perform this season, but I do know that the impact of a single star player on a season is much less than the fans tend to imagine.

Bryce Harper grounded out to first in his Phillies debut. They sure aren't getting their money's worth with him.

Mike Trout flied out in his first plate appearance against the A's. He is batting .000 for the year, the Angels sure aren't getting their money's worth with the new contract extension.

Harper struck out in his second plate appearance, he's killing the Phillies.

Machado also whiffed against Madison Bumgarner and is batting .000 for the year.

What more proof that these long term deals are bummers do we need?

Tatis 2-2 in the early going, on pace for a season average of 1.000

Harper wound 0-3 with a walk and two strikeouts. He wasn't needed, his teammates bashed the Braves 10-2 despite each club having 7 hits and 6 walks.

Trout wound up 1 for 3, a single, and had a walk in a losing effort to the A's, 4-0.

Machado was 0-3, striking out twice, but like Harper he wasn't needed as the Padres shut out the Giants 2-0.

The Giants had five hits, the Dodgers had 8 home runs while stomping the Diamondbacks 12-5. The 8 home runs are an opening day record.
