23 year old Austin Meadows, just acquired from the Pirates, led off for the Rays and took Justin Verlander over the wall before he had recorded an out. That turned out to be the only run surrendered by Verlander who went seven innings and struck out nine in the Astros 5-1 win.

Nola wasn't overly sharp so far as control, but still only gave up 1 run on 2 hits and struck out 8.. Walking 5.. Not going to get concerned.. It was the first start of the year. Looks like Kapler is doing the whole 100 pitch count thing early in the year again.. At least it ended better this year than last year.

Harper scored from that walk (Which was intentional) with Hoskins' slam.

McCutchen homered to lead off the game. I think he's going to be the best signing the Phillies did this offseason.

Franco added a 3 run homer.. But.. He's proven to be someone who starts out pretty good, giving you hope and then tails off after a month or two.

But.. That's a nice 3-4 combination having Harper and Hoskins.. I think teams will think twice about walking Harper to get to Hoskins down the road. Seemed a bad decision to me when it happened.

Why did so many teams have the day off yesterday (Friday)? There were only 8 games. I don't recall ever seeing teams having a day off in the middle of a series other than an unplanned cancellation due to weather or other force majeure event.

Pretty common. It's used as backup day for the home opener, which is a guaranteed sellout at top tier prices.

Cards vs Brewers opening series is living up to expectations so far. Back and forth.

Lugo, NY Mets, going for save, with 7 run lead, as he faced tying run in 8th.

Not sure if that or Ramos Infield hit is more unusual.

What the hell are the Texas Rangers wearing around their necks? Are those supposed to be bandannas or something?

Christian Yelich is off to a bang up job of defending his MVP crown. He just hit his 4th home run of the season in the Brewer's 4th game of the year, a pace to give him 162, which I think would be a record, at least in the National League anyway.

Yelich is batting .455/.571/1.545

Yelich wound up reaching base in all five plate appearances. He had a home run, a double and three walks. Scored two, drove in three. His double was a game winning walk off.

Not a bad day.
