Meanwhile over in the AL, the Rays appear determined to recapture the best record in baseball, and have done so (for now anyway) by smacking down the Angels a couple times. The Cubs do their part to claim a share of the "best record in baseball" title by taking care of business like they have for the last four weeks.

As long as Big Z gets it back together, Cubs pitching looks incredibly solid right now. As a Cubs fan I should know better than to get prematurely optimistic, but I don't see any team being able to beat up on Cubs pitching 4 times in a series. If anything knocks the Cubs out of the playoffs, it will be their own streak-prone batting. It's been maddening how many games the Cubs have lost this year after the pitching has held the opponents to 3 runs or less.

Default Referring To Cecil Cooper's 90-Win Goal

Well, this year, perhaps.

The Astros had a long winning streak last week and they're going to need several more if they even dream of meeting that goal. Don't get me wrong, it was fun to watch. The problem is, they won't be getting much help from Chicago or St Louis and the Brewers. Houston's play is just too inconsistent and has been all year long. It'd be a different story if they were just four or five games back. They're not. It's not 2005 all over again where the Astros always found a way to win and overcame deficits. This Astros team is very different, and I don't see a 35-10 win-loss run happening this time.

Default The Division Right Now

Meanwhile, back on this thread, not much has changed in the Central. Same three teams at the top. It's just too bad that 2 and 3 aren't closer than they are. Everybody within the division plays each other tonight and for the next few nights. Lots of division-rival battles will be going on from now on and through much of the rest of the season. Should be some good games.

Well, it's interesting, anyway. Lou Piniella just plain wins, period. To correct one of my previous posts, it's ninety-nine years since they've won a championship. And, as I've alluded to on other occasions, we're waiting to see how they'll choke this time, but it looks like it'll happen come playoff time if it even does happen. Don't get me wrong now. Some teams that have great regular seasons do go on to win all the marbles. And there have been others who tore up the world before the end of September that ended up crashing and burning in the divisional playoffs or league championships, if they didn't even fold before then. I'm reminded of the 2001 Seattle Mariner team which won 116 games in the regular season, and they looked like they were just going to cruise through all of the playoff tiers and get to the World Series and make history. That team, as you may remember, lost to the Yankees in the first round of the playoffs. Oh, and the manager of that team?? None other than Lou Piniella. But he's also won a championship in Cincinnati nearly 20 years ago, too. So, sometimes you might go all the way, and sometimes you don't.

Well, you've got something to build on for next season. Arroyo and Volquez. You just need a few more. There is potential on that staff, and if everybody's healthy, and you get a good lineup together, you might be able to pull it together next year.
