Here's how it looks at this writing. Keep in mind that these are as we go into tonight's action.
St Louis (5-2, - )
Chicago (5-2, - )
Pittsburgh (4-3, 1 GB)
Cincinnati (2-3, 2 GB)
Milwaukee (2-4, 2.5 GB)
Houston (1-6, 4 GB)
Interesting first week, with good starts by the Cards and, surprisingly, the Pirates. The Reds begin their longest road trip of the season today. They saw the first complete game in the major leagues this year as Aaron Harang shut out the Pirates on Sunday in a 2-0 win. For the Brewers, they have to begin their season without closer Trevor Hoffman, who strained his oblique. Pittsburgh has already seen two extremes this past week on the road, themselves being one-hit by the Cards' Chris Carpenter, and also committing the majors' first triple-play this season yesterday. The Houston Astros are off to a 1-6 start and, so far, nothing for them seems to click. They take to the road this week in hopes that their fortunes will change. Concerned? Yes. Worried? No. Elsewhere, the Cubs are already dealing with bullpen concerns, as in one game against the Brewers, they had five walks in Friday's loss. There are also concerns about reliever Kevin Gregg's knee tightening up after warmups. Lou Piniella still says he's their man, but they are exercising caution. And St Louis is off to a good start, thanks in no small part to righty starter Kyle Lohse, who is now 17-6 since beginning with the Cardinals last season. Albert Pujols is still smoking the baseball like always, and proving yet again that he is an Astro-killer.
Case, overall after all the yrs now, are you happy you have C.Lee?
I am, MC. I've never been disappointed with him, and it's early in the season. He's been a good hitter, though I would not mind having Albert Pujols in my lineup.
But I think Lee does just fine with Houston. He just needs to stay healthy.
It used to be customary that the next batter after someone hit a home run would get plunked and each team knew this and it was widely accepted as one of many of baseball's unwritten rules.
That was before teams had millions invested in each player. It was poor sportsmanship then and it's still poor sportsmanship today.
Pitching is looking really shaky though. That needs to change because the bats can't rescue 'em every time. I've been bitching a lot about the relief pitching but the starters aren't looking to hot right now either.
And you would have thought the coaching staff would have learned nothing else by now if not this: Don't leave Marmol out for more than one inning. Oh yeah, and don't put Cotts on the mound for any reason, ever, unless you need someone to pitch an intentional walk or two. They'd be just as well off sending Mike Fontenot to the mound. Maybe better.
