Of course, you'll always need a big bopper in the middle of the lineup.
A return to small ball, when guys like Ricky Henderson would get on base and drive a pitcher nuts with his speed. Sac bunts, stolen bases, double steals, speed on the bases all need to return to their role in the game.

I know he's only 21, but he's striking out at a record setting pace.

And whatever happened to Oneil Cruz?

I believe he's hurt.

As an A's fan, it was such a pleasure to be able to go to a game and watch him.

I think it was Bill James who, when asked if Henderson is a Hall of Famer, said...."If you could split him in two, you'd have two Hall of Famers".

I also saw him on the field as a coach with the Mets.....in a game at Shea in September during the year that they had that horrendous September losing streak. The fans in my section weren't shy re their displeasure with the team.

I miss the lost art of bunting, & the suicide squeeze play.

Nobody's talking about Will Benson, so you heard it from me first.
^^^7 weeks after I wrote the post above, & Will Benson's stats are better than de la Cruz's...except stolen bases, & at-bats:

https://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/cin/stats

On-base-plus-slugging Benson ~160 points higher. Benson should be getting a lot more at bats.

de la Cruz is faster, & has a few more hits & stolen bases, but the gap wouldn't be as wide if Benson was getting more at bats...Benson would likely have more hits & RBI's than de la Cruz is Benson was getting his fari share of plate appearences.

Cinci's Manager is holding his team back by holding Benson back.

de la Cruz has amazing athletic skills, but at this point, I'd take Benson over de la Cruz.

People fall in love with players like Oneil Cruz and de la Cruz because of their athleticism, size and potential, but the production hasn't been what's been expected.

Getting Benson was a steal for the Reds, but it’s really part of one of the biggest robberies in recent MLB trades.

The Reds traded starting pitcher Tyler Mahle to the Twins, who promptly blew out his arm and required Tommy John surgery. He’s pitched 41 innings for the Twins since the trade.

In exchange for Mahle, the Reds received:

Spencer Steer (1B/3B/DH/OF), who hit .271 with 23 homers, 86 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 2023.
Christian Encarnaceron-Strand (1B/DH) who hit .270 with 13 HR
Steven Hajjar

Hajjar is a minor league arm who was packaged with another minor leaguer to get Will Benson from Cleveland.

Benson batted .275 for the Reds with 11 HR and 19 SB. He’s 6’5”, weighs 230 but can still really run.

Elly really faded in the 2nd half and ended up batting .235 with 13 HR and 35 SB.

Add in Matt McLain, Noelvi Marte, Andrew Abbott and the Reds had a group of exciting young players.

This post from back in July aged quite well...Benson's 2023 hitting stats were better than de la Cruz's were. Benson wasn't hitting in a RBI spot like Elly was, so Wil's RBI's were lower...Benson was hitting 8th or 9th all season long:

https://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/cin/stats

Benson hit .275, de la Cruz wound up at just .235.
