I love my Tigers, but I bet ya can't guess who my all time player is....
Hint: look at screen name.
Right now, I like Curtis Granderson of the Tigers, Chipper Jones of the Braves, and a brilliant young pitcher for the D-Backs, Dan Haren.

Every time I hear Dan Haren's name, it kills me. I remember how well he pitched for the Cards in the 2004 World Series, and then we let him get away in the trade for the oft-injured Mark Mulder. That worked out well.

Yankees
Mickey Mantle
Late in his career I saw him have a 2-HR game in Washington. The thing I remember most was the way he gingerly trotted along the basepaths, his face grimaced in pain. We've all seen footage of Kirk Gibson hobbling around the diamond in the '88 Series, but Mantle had to do this through 90 per cent of his career. Five years after the first knee injury occurred in 1951 he could still win a Triple Crown and be considered among the 3 or 4 fastest runners in baseball. Ten years later he could still hit 54 HRs despite playing much of the season with an abscessed thigh. I wonder what he could have accomplished with two good legs. Perhaps Hank Aaron would've been chasing the Mick instead of the Babe.

Check out "Gibby" in the last photo. Man, that guy was intense. Kirk Gibson doesn't have Hall of Fame stats, but I'd bet he doesn't care. He can look at his two Wolrd Series rings and know he was a major contributor for his teams. Back when he was the "color guy", for FSN Detroit's broadcasts of the Tigers, he would have a slew of stories to tell.
One story that I remember:
He explained how Al Kaline taught him how to run without his eyeballs bouncing around.

Gibson was a good one and if I'm not mistaken could have played in the NFL.
