Elmer Valo. outfielder. 22 seasons in MLB, from 1940 to 1961. Played with seven clubs in his career, around half of it with the Philadelphia/Kansas City Athletics. After his retirement he worked as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Indians and then spent 13 years as a scout for the Philadelphia Phillies. He set a record for most walks by a pinch hitter with 91...
Dutch Zwilling has the distinction of being last on all MLB alphabetical lists.
He and Rollie Zeider were the second and third players to have played for three teams in the same city. (Lave Cross played for four Philadelphia teams).
Zwilling is the all-time Federal League home run leader with 29 in its two seasons. He appeared in 366 games with the Chicago White Sox, Chi-Feds/Whales and Cubs, batting .284, .351, 30, 202 with 46 SB's. Pretty decent stats by today's standards, but in the "teens" decade home runs were not popular.
Steve Barber, pitcher. 1960 to 1974 in MLB, the first eight seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. Got a little print here and there in Jim Bouton's bestseller book Ball Four because in 1969 he was picked in the expansion draft by the Seattle Pilots. Had a good start to his career as an Oriole, but developed arm trouble in his last year with the Orioles and unfortunately never really recovered...
was an infielder for the early '90's Albuquerque Dukes. He wasn't much of a hitter with a career .341/.370 line in AAA but was generally regarded as being a good defender.
He couldn't displace Jose (E-6) Offerman though and was traded to the Montreal Expos. He later signed with the Oakland A's.
For his career Bournigal hit .301/.318 and was worth -0.8 WAR in 1035 trips to the plate.
Caesar Cedeno....underrated centerfielder for the Astros who batting numbers were deflated by the Astrodome for the first dozen of his 17 seasons.
I always get Cedeno and Jimmy "The Toy Cannon" Wynn confused....both Houston centerfielders, and one of them stabbed his girlfriend while the other was shot by his wife...or was it one was stabbed by his wife and the other shot his girlfriend...I'd look it up but then I'd just forget again right away.
