Pretty amazing guy, pitched 20 major league seasons and never had a significant injury. He was on the disabled list only once his entire major league career, for a couple of weeks in April 2002 for inflamed nerves in his lower back. Not a single arm or shoulder injury.

This was despite the fact that he is considered very small for a pitcher, especially a right hander.

Easy first ballot HOF, should be close to unanimous.

Incredible career, indeed. Never realized he sustained only that one minor injury over all those years.

8th on the career wins list and 18 time gold glove winner. Definitely first ballot HOF player!

So, let's see, how does this work? Does the five years he has to be retired in order to be on the HOF ballot start with this announcement, which may make it just barely too late to make the ballot for the '14 HOF inductees, or is it retroactive to the last season he played, which would mean he will be retired five years at the end of the '13 season and would be on the ballot for '14? In other words, WHEN he goes in during his first year of eligibility, will that be in 2014 or 2015?

It is amazing about only the one injury. Maddux's career has been extraordinary for its consistency. For the most part, even star pitchers have their occasional off years, ususally, I would guess, because their performance is affected by injury. With Maddux, after a few years of working his way into the major leagues, every season was a big winning season all the way up until age began to catch up with him in just the last few years. Never even one off year in all those seasons. What an amazing career. Thanks for all the great years turned in by a really class act.

I believe it is five years after the final year you were an active player.

Maddux retiring is going to hurt Mussina's chances in 5 years. If Glavin, Pedro and Randy Johnson retire next yr and/or the year after, that's going to hurt him too.
