I like this signing. Ibanez is a solid player, and as much as I like Burrell, he can't play a good outfield anymore...he's too slow. He's an American League DH at this point.
Interesting move by the Phillies, Ibanez has a very good bat.
Take a look at his home/road split the past couple of years, it gives you a good idea of how he can have even better numbers than his historical totals. His swing is made for Citizens Bank Park, many of his doubles would be HRs in Philly.
Though a couple of years older than Burrell, his athleticism is better. I wouldn't write off his ability to maintain performance the next couple of seasons.
great signing...for 1 year! ibanez is 38 years old and should tear up that little soap box the phillies call home. but he'll be a bad contract 2 to 3 years from now.
My guess is to the AL to a team needing a DH. If he only has to play the OF sometimes, and maybe even 1B, and DH some games, he can be valuable to an AL team. I think the Rays would be a good fit for him, they need a DH, can use a solid veteran with all of their young guys, and he has a home in Clearwater.
I just hope he doesn't go to the Yanks or Mets....I always want to be able to root for Pat. A class act who loved playing Philly...even though he was booed for quite a while here. And never complained or lashed out at the fans...he understood the fans' frustration with how things used to be in Philly.
I wish he was coming back, but there really was no place for him here....he's too slow to be an everyday outfielder anymore, and 1B (his position when he first came up to the majors) is blocked by Ryan Howard.
