One of the most significant problems I saw last year was the very high number of bats that broke during many games:
Less than a week after Major League Baseball announced new regulations in December concerning maple-wood bat production, a bat manufacturer named Romeo Filip sent an email to the owners and operators of nearly every bat-making company. He wanted them to read the letter he had written to Roy Krasik, baseball’s point man for the bat debate, that ran 696 angry, profane, passionate words long...“The morons you hired to do this amazing research have put together a list of the stupidest regulations ever assembled on one piece of paper,” wrote Filip, one of his milder comments.
I imagine they might consider it--part of the reason for the poor quality of bats has been the elimination of virgin forest. The truth is, maple today isn't of the same quality as it was 50 years ago. The problem is, if they went to some other wood, every record ever set in baseball would be invalidated. Or rather, no records set with the different could be integrated with records set using maple. Too much statistical confusion!
We should start a contest, guessing how long it will take before someone actually comes along and suggests using metal bats in major league baseball. (I say this with tongue planted firmly in cheek, although secretly frightened that someone will make the suggestion in all seriousness!)

Actually, I would think that over the long term some type of composite bat may end up being "the answer".
