If the Indians would sign him, it would make them the AL Central favorite.

Unfortunately, he is now a Met . I *think* they're in the NL. No?

Now that he's a Met I was wondering if you softened you stance at all?
He's a jerk no doubt about that, but he can hit and he might help the Mets beat the Phillies this yr.

Absolutely not! It's just one more thing to disgust me--right along with the ticket prices at Citifield and the $36 million contract extended to Oliver Perez, a pitcher who cannot go beyond the fifth inning. Gary Sheffield as a Met probably means that Dan Murphy can kiss New York goodbye, and I'm not happy about that, at all.
As far as beating the Phillies, in 2007 and 2008 it was not the Phillies who beat the Mets. It was the Mets who beat themselves. No September collapse, no Philadelphia appearances in the playoffs. Anyone can argue that all they want, but them's the facts. And last year, in particular, it was the bullpen that wound up being the Mets' downfall. Sheffield's bat in the lineup wouldn't have made a difference.

Fred,
I'm hearing they might alternate him between right and left depending on the pitcher.Dan Murphy is going nowhere,he'll remain with them. Shef will wind up helping the Mets because this is his contract year so i'd expect good things. His spring stats are because he's just coming back from an injury. He's going to open alot of eyes considering he's 40 and I wouldn't be surprised if you see a .275,25+ hr's,80+ rbi's.

He is now. When I wrote that post recently, I had speculated he would DH somewhere, given his age, so I figured he'd click on with another AL team. To my surprise, he didn't. With the Mets, he'd have to play a position now.

I can't argue with your having speculated that he would be DH'ing in the AL. But, we Met fans have the braintrust of Omar Minaya and his pal Tony Bernazard guiding the personnel moves. HELP!!!!!!!!!

Well, thank you. You may have just rescued the entire 2009 season for me. Although I must say, a high profile acquisition who bats .275 and only drives in 80 runs isn't what I would call a superstar. (It may be that I'm guilty of having high standards, however).

Most people in the dugout previously liked him,he has a very good arm and not a slouch defensively. The thing you heard about him shutting it down;I heard that about Rickey Henderson too. He'll be fine and if he plays the majority of the games he'll put up at least this I believe. The categories that get passed over are that he always seemed to get the hits in clutch situations. He could hit over 30 but i'm guessing he'll be a semi full time player.I would love to have him playing rightfield instead of Nady right now for me.Once it's a few weeks into the season you'll forget all about doubting him,and for only $400k,how could you go wrong?
