I have had the opportunity to be able to grow up watching Joe Mauer play baseball. Since going to his high school games and now to Twins games, he truly is an incredible baseball player. For those who understand the game of baseball either has avid fans or former players, Joe Mauer just has something about him that is great. This season he looks better than he ever has, and is consistanly putting up hits and getting on base. His power has finally come out too.
Can Joe Mauer be the next to .400? He is currently batting .430 but is still 40 at-bats short of being eligable. From what I am seeing this year, I think Joe can be the next to get over that .400 mark.
I can't disagree with anything you have said in the first paragraph of your post.
Whether or not he can finish the season at .400 remains to be seen.
There might not be a more difficult accomplishment in baseball in this era, and the proof is in the fact that nobody is doing it, even in their best years. I would love to see him do it. He's on my short list of active players who can. The odds are against him, but when it comes to huge accomplishments like this, they always are.
Ted Williams went down to the wire when he did it. The Bosox played a doubleheader to end the season. He was hitting something like .3996 and his manager offered to give him the day off since the games were meaningless in the standings. But Williams chose to play and had a big day to finish the year at .406.
If it were to happen (I have my doubts, but forever is a long time) I think it will be an Ichiro type (high contact rate, excellent speed, lefty) and it will probably be someone who was hurt for a month or two and barely qualified for the batting title.
