So as a whole NY state is pretty evenly split between the Yanks and Mets with the Yankees maybe having a slightly larger fan base.

That's right! I totally saw Teixeira walloping Phillies pitchers with a bag full of pennies. Yup. And an army of Benjamins marched out of the Yankee dugout and won the game and beat the Phillies into submission. I must've missed that part.
I must've also missed the part where Teixeira was awesome (.150 avg?), where Cano produced anything, where Swisher produced anything, where Burnett wasn't shelled completely in Game 5 and where A-Rod was this godlike creature people make him out to be.
Ok, since payroll means so much (right?), let's say there was a player on the yankees who over the course of 20 games had the following line:
12H, 75AB, 9RBI, 28K - That would be a .160 hitter, right? What if there was a pitcher with an ERA of 7.00? Would that be considered stellar?
Hardly.
So, since payroll is apparently the be-all end-all of baseball,
Teixeira, Rodriguez, Cano and Swisher hit a combined .160 over 75AB and 28K. Burnett had an ERA of 7.00. Not exactly superb play. Their team was hurt by their presence on the field. Their total salaries for 2009 were 81M. 81M of the Yankee lineup produced squat.
Glad to know that the big steaming pile of 81M was intimidating enough to win the WS.
Point is, payroll isn't nearly as big of a deal as what you think. Now, you may proceed to counter my point with "pbbbttttttttt."

Getting there only means so much.Winning it all means showing up. When Arizona played us a while back they had Randy Johnson and Schilling as starters. On paper were the better team but they were smart enough to pitch them both on short rest in a 3 man rotation and they wound up winning it.The fact is salary means nothing against a solid performance.

Very true..BUT.the Banks always give themselves a more than fighting chance by signing the best players. Does that guarantee a WS victory...no. Or else the Banks would win it every year. .. Look , i don't want to diminish the fact the Banks played great this year. I just think that baseball has a problem when 1 team can sign the best 3 players using ONLY money..sorry man, it isn't a good thing. You should ALWAYS be able to sign your current roster,..no cap ..But free agents should not be as accessable. The same team should not have spent the most money 9 years on a row..

Last time I checked, all players were bought. If we are rating teams based on bringing in young (homegrown) players, then the Yankees are doing pretty well in that regard.
BTW, Texiera was not hitting well until Alex Rodriguez got back into the lineup.
Bottom line is that you want a socialist league. The world needs ditch diggers too!

Hey don't get me wrong, guys like Sabathia or Teixeira are great but i've always favored the working class guys like Mattingly,Swisher or even Damon who played for alot of scrub teams before he came into his own. I like what Arod brings to the Yankees but i'm not a big fan. I wasn't happy when Clemens became a Yankee either, but I guess it was the only way he was going to get a ring considering playing for the Sox and Blue Jays didn't work.

Guys like Sabathia and Texeira and Rodriguiz amd Matsui and ..well you get the point won you a WS..not Damon or Swisher....we ALL like the lunchpail guys...but without the stars you know what you get ...? The Minnesota Twins
You have TWO players who get my respect...Jeter and Riveira ..homegrown and phenomenal. The rest of the homegrown players are nice additions but you ain't winnin no WS without the big boys who came riding in on a "MAGIC " carpet last year.

If you watched the series you'd realize Pettitte and Posada played major roles in wins. Swisher started one of our go ahead innings and Damon with his double stolen base gave us wins.If you remember this year during the regular season Sabathia started slow and so did Tex. Damon was popping HR's early as was Swisher and I can't even remember how many walk offs there were from Melky (especially against Joe Nathan). We had a well balance attack with many role players including Hughes(farm), Robertson (farm),Cervelli (when we lost our top 2 catchers).
If you watched our season you'd realize that our depth more then anything got us to the playoffs and our starters put us into the series. Timely hitting didn't hurt either.

I already made a comment about our season but if you break down the world series Sabathia played a major role but Tex and Burnett didn't as much.Pettitte(another homegrown guy) got 2 wins for us in the series. No other Yankee had 2 wins in the WS.
