Paragraphs are used for change in topics. Considering the topic didn't change, why would I do it? To appease you? If you want to pick at something, pick at your teams and their commitment to winning. What happens if Lebron goes? Are the Cavs going to be like the Browns and Indians and be losers for the next 20 years? Lots of small market teams can be competitive, why can't yours?

Fair enough, but when they have weakness at a position, they can easily afford to hire someone else's strength.

Isn't it true that almost every FA is courted heavily by the Yankees & Red Sox? Many teams can only afford to go after FAs sparingly. Teams with big TV markets have a clear advantage. How many other teams could afford to sign Teixeira, Sabathia, and Burnett? Heck, even the Red Sox can't afford that!

Just a tidbit (didn't wanna start a new thread)
Yankees have the record in ANY sport to have the most players as teammates for so long: Jete, Jorge & Mariano, 16 years.

Tigers Trammel, Whittaker and somebody else (good trivia question for other thread perhaps) were previously longest with 15 years.

True difference between the Yankees & those contending '80s Tigers to the whining cheapo teams: The penny-pinching latter would have let such players walk as soon as they were about to become stars.

again with the Yankees and the Red Sox. The Yanks spent 80 million more than the Red Sox in 2009, and the Red Sox weren't 2nd in payroll the Mets were 30 million more than the Sox, the Red Sox were 4th at 121 million, and in line with the Tigers, Cubs, Phillies and Angels. All of these teams were between 113 and 130 Million.

With the signing of Lackey and Beckett among others and probably a new contract for V.Martinez, you will be gaining on my Yankees significantly as we slowly cut payroll.

Minnesota doesn't go the free agent route but is always competitive. So are many other teams. Others just go for the profit and don't care about the outcome.

How competitive would they be in the East?

I think they definitely would have a harder time but how well to Baltimore and Toronto do? Minnesota is a better run organization and could be just like Tampa with better veterans,so there is a chance they could do quite well.

The Yankees are cutting payroll? That's strange, I was just reading an article last week that pointed out NY has raised payroll 2% for this year...to 206.3 million, still some 45 million more than the Red Sox...

Of more interest:

Quote:
The Yankees, whose payroll is nearly six times that of the Pittsburgh Pirates' $34.9 million, are led by third baseman Alex Rodriguez's $33 million salary. New York's starting infield will earn $85.2M, more than 16 teams.
