Is Jim Joyce a racist or not? Nobody knows. It's impossible to say whether he is or isn't.
Two things come to mind in this scenario:
1) The call was clear enough that major league umpires don't blow these calls. Maybe a high school or little league ump, but not at this level.
2) Like others have said, 99.99% of big-league umpires would err on the side of the pitcher given these circumstances.
It really makes you wonder what the heck was going through his head....
I know I would, but there is a school of thought that the ump should call it as he sees it, everytime, regardless of game situation. So if he truly felt he saw it that way, at least he stuck to the spirit of officiating. Get the call right, regardless of situation. It just turns out he was brutally wrong here.
