I think if they wanted to that they could, but it depends on Kobe rallying the team to do it

I think you are understating how hard it is to beat that mark. If they hit a 3 game skid they are already halfway to ten losses and we are over a month away from Christmas. There is no and I mean zero chance they do it.

Hmm..the Lakers are looking awfully good this season, and indeed sometimes appear to be able to score at will. They have a killer blend of having awesome 1 on 1 players who can take it to the hole, but are also great at running plays and moving the ball around the perimeter. Gasol plays his butt off every minute, and Kobe is just plain ridiculously good.
That being said, 72-10 is a tall order. It's a looong season, guys get hurt or slow down and tend to pace themselves for the playoff, or "second season" in which almost half the teams make it into. Also, road games tend to wear these dudes out down the stretch. Did you know that of all the major sports the home team has the highest winning percentage in the NBA?
I'd say the Lakers will go 60-22.

Alot of things have to go right for 72-10. Firstly, team health. If one of your major stars goes down for any period of time, there goes that hope out the window. I don't expect Kobe to play another 82 game season, not with his growing pile of injuries. That 96 Bulls team was more or less lightning in a bottle, when you take into account the playoffs, they were 87-13, with two of those playoff losses against the Sonics in the finals. Very hard to top that.

The Lakers are the team to beat but there is no way they are going 72-10 or any team for that matter.

I'm a Laker fan but don't think they can reach 72 wins especially with the talented competition in the Western conference. Denver, Phoenix, Utah all look very strong. New Orleans, Oklahoma City, Dallas, San Antonio are looking very powerful as well.

I agree. The West is just to competative for that. That Bulls team, need I remind anyone, had the BEST player of all time!!! Kobe is beast but cant take over in these times, cause there is just to much talent everywhere else. After today they can only lose 8 more times in 71 games. If they do it, Hats of to em but if not, Im sure they'd rather have a trip to the Finals instead of a stat.

Not to forget lockdown defenders at 3 positions, an excellent bench led by Kukoc where everyone understood their roles, and a coach that knew how to put it all together. Plus Jordan was super motivated after his embarrassment against the Magic the prior year. And the team was healthy all year. Jordan was scoring champ and MVP. Rodman was rebounding champ, Kukoc 6th man of the year, Phil Jackson coach of the year. Pippen had established himself as maybe the best all-around player in the league in Jordan's absence. Hell, Steve Kerr won the 3-point shootout that year. Again, it was a lightning in a bottle scenario.

The biggest reason they won't is that they could care less about 72 wins...Kobe only cares about getting his 6th ring, and he and Phil realize that busting it during January & February playing 40+ minutes a night to squeak out every single win isn't going to accomplish that goal. They will be right around 60 wins and playing either Boston or Orlando in June.

Already having 2 losses means they'd have to go 64-8, and they haven't even played any of the East's top 4 teams (figure a 5-3 or 6-2 record at best in those games); nor have they played San Antonio, New Orleans, Utah or OK City...another 14 or 15 games right there that they'd have to win all but 1 or 2 to have any shot at hitting that 72 win mark. Plus, along w/teams like the cHeat & Celtics, you are going to get the other teams best shot as those guys on the lower-level teams in the league know it's there one or two shots a season to play w/the best and want to show that they belong.

They have a good enough team to do it but injuries and illness will prevent them from reaching the mark.
