I thought he was going to be a bust when they drafted him.
Think about this, the Portland Trail Blazers missed on Michael Jordan, opting to draft Sam Bowie instead. Now, the Blazers have missed on Kevin Durant, drafting Oden instead.
Yeah and the Blazers have historically had bad luck with picking big men over more dominant and talented players. And Durant has a whole career of superstardom ahead of him at this point.
The hope among Blazer fans that Oden would eventually recover enough to become if not a franchise player at least a essential role player--maybe average a double double a game--seems pretty slim at this point. It will be interesting to see if the Blazers try to resign Oden with a bargain contract just to see how he pans out or if he'll be gone by this summer.
The Blazers went from being the Jailblazers to the Frailblazers...Now that Brandon Roy's knee is basically shot too... Oh well, we're winning games without either of those guys---although if LaMarcus Aldridge gets injured they're really screwed.
I don't think there is any question that he's a bust. I think his worth ethic, discipline, character, and resolve are his downfall. These are not qualities that can be ascertained come draft time unless you have the ability to recognize them.
Lacking these qualities, he is nothing but trouble. The only problem the Blazers have had, is recognizing these flaws in their draft picks.
Yeah, I would be comfortable saying that he is a bust. If you plotted his perceived potential on a graph it would look like a drunk guy falling down a flight of stairs. And like others said, it adds more salt to the wound that he does not seem to care...
The crazy thing is, the majority of GM's at the time would have made the same choice, Oden over Durant. Reportedly, San Antonio offered to trade Tim Duncan for that pick so they could draft Oden.
I think if he could stay healthy, he could be one of the better centers in the league.
He's been "injured" since he's been drafted. Although it's been 2 seasons.
He's heading down the path of Grant Hill. Grant is a great player but that does not mean Oden will be.

I think it is too early to consider him the next NBA bust. Give him a year or maybe two years before folks consider him a bust. Injuries are a part of being an athlete. Kenyon Martin, Antonio McDyess, Jermaine O'Neal, and even Tracy McGrady have come back from career threatening injuries and played productive basketball.
