With Phil Jackson saying this will definitley be his last year coaching the Lakers. The search is on for a new coach and some that have been mentioned are Brian Shaw, and perhaps Byron Scott.

But as I watched the Lakers beat the Spurs over the weekend, I saw Kobe Byant talking stragedy with his Laker teammates as if he were the head coach.

Then I remembered such past players like Bill Russell and Lenny Wilkens were player/coaches towards the end of their hall of fame careers. Is Kobe Bryant a possible player/coach candidate?

Just a thought for discussion.

No I don't see Kobe as a player-coach. Kobe tries to emulate Jordan and Jordan wasn't a player-coach. I can't see Kobe in this role.

I don't think any of the people you mentioned will be coach, certainly not Byron Scott. Maybe one of the assistant coaches will take over.

The Lakers have a lot of loyalty so likely one of their assistants.

However, they are one of the premier franchises so they could certainly attract a lot of interest for the job.

My money however is on an assistant that has a good relationship with Kobe.

They probably get a assistant coach or someone who is actually familiar with the team and there style of play.

Does anyone else think that Jim Clemons has earned a try at this job?

Thinking Scott also but Clemons really deserves at least a shot.

Really? Has this been discussed in media etc or is this more of a hunch?

kobe is almost done playing? yeah in 5 more years. in the mean time, kobe has ultimate say in who coaches. write it down, take a picture, carve it in stone its fact! lets put it this way, tim duncan in almost done playing but i will guarantee he would be the FIRST person in the spurs organization the owners and GM would talk to about the coaching decision. hell if the heat fire their coach, they will have a meeting with lebron wade and bosh 1st thing on who they will play for.

regardless of how long your biggest star making the most money is going to play, you always consult him ASAP, especially when he is the main reason your tickets are being sold.
