Without Rudy Gay.

Next year with Rudy available...watch out. Nobody wants to hear this...but here it goes...Memphis will be a serious contender if he returns to full health.

I don't know why nobbody wants to hear it. IT'S THE TRUTH. Actually the Grizzlies have been playing good ball for the past month or so. They don't get a lot of media coverage but they on one of the best young teams in basketball.

They definitely looked more athletic than the Spurs. If they can play tough defense and have great shoot selection it's going to be a great series.

Don't feel too bad for the Spurs depth-wise. They have been around since the old ABA, it's not like they are an expansion team that failed in Canada and have to now play in a mid-size market in a city where the money demographics are not too good compared to let's say 200 miles away in Nashville where the Preds NHL hockey teams sells out their arena on a regular basis because people in the Nashville area have lots of money to spend. Memphis in general has lots of issues with poverty and crime. Starwood Amphitheater in Nashville was torn down even though it was a palace compared to the one at Mud Island in Memphis. (just for comparison sake) So, to pull for Memphis is to pull for not only the underdog Grizz but for a city with troubles. It makes you feel good when they do good. Pulling for the Preds by contrast is like pulling for Vandy (who I also like)...still an underdog to the veteran NHL just as Vandy will always be the underdog in football to Florida, Georgia, etc. every fall...but the Preds and Vandy don't represent a desperate socio-economic situation like Memphis is trapped in.

But they may be so beat up and worn out from playing Memphis that may be as far at they go IF they can get past them.

While you don't want to see guys get injured, watching that over-the-hill punk Antonio McDyess slunk off to the locker room shaken up was quite refreshing. I was at one of the college games he played in where he got kicked out of the game for conduct worse than anything most people will ever see.

And did the Grizz add insult to injury - they certainly did. By beating the Spurs again to take the lead in the series.

My prediction has always been for the Grizz to ax the Spurs in the first round but most people thought I was talking crazy...
