Though I'm not a big Mike Tirico fan, I do think he's better than Mike Breen on PBP.

One thing I was thinking about the other day (which I'm sure many people thought about years ago) was how much better TNT's NBA announcing is than ESPN's NBA announcing. I think most people would agree that TNT's studio guys are miles better than ESPN's, but generally-speaking TNT's game announcers are better than ESPN's too, particularly when you are talking about #1 announcing teams.

I agree about TNT having better announcers but not a better studio team. At halftime on TNT all Charles and Kenny does is play around and not talk seriously about basketball. On the otherhand, in the ESPN studio you have Wilbon, Magic, and Rose who talk seriously about the game.

IMO, Kenny Smith and Charles Barkley, especially Smith, bring a lot of insight as TNT's studio analysts in between their playful banter with each other and Ernie Johnson. I think they are better analysts than the ESPN's studio analysts, in addition to being more entertaining.

100% agree. Webber provides some good analysis as well...

Webber has been better than I expected when he got the gig. Pleasantly surprised.

Chris Webber always tried to project a tough-guy, anti-establishment persona when he played, but the reality is the guy has always been, IMO, a sensitive guy who is actually pretty smart. I'm actually not surprised he's a solid analyst (and I agree, he's a solid analyst).

Yeah, the 30 for 30 they did on the fab five shed some light on C-Webbs past for me. I always took him at face value, and that chaged my view on him a lot.

Barkley and kenny smith just act like they are in their living room when on air. When greg anthony tried to have a intelligent conversation with barkley 3 weeks ago, I see he was never invited back because he didn't want to clown around.

You know, one thing I sensed during the NCAA Tournament coverage on CBS/TBS/TNT/truTV was some tension between Greg Anthony and Charles Barkley. Unlike Kenny Smith, Anthony doesn't appear to have the kind of personality to play off of Sir Charles' antics. That's too bad, because I think Greg Anthony is a solid studio analyst (though I think Smith is better).

On a related note, I thought just about all the analysts TNT and/or NBA TV brought to the NCAA Tournament coverage (both in the studio and announcing the games) earlier this year were better than the guys CBS already had on college basketball (though I guess Greg Anthony was already with CBS in addition to NBA TV). Kenny Smith (studio) and Steve Kerr (games) are both real standouts for TNT IMO.

One final thought - I'd like to see CBS and Turner strengthen their relationship, ala ABC/ESPN and NBC/VS; that might allow the NBA's over-the-air national TV package to be on CBS (using the TNT guys) rather than ABC.
