You forgot the player voted the greatest of the first half of the 20th century, George Mikan.
yeah, except he played for the Minneapolis Lakers, talking about the L.A. Lakers though, the Lakers have had more success under Buss than Cooke, since Buss bought the franchise in 1979, they have made the NBA Final's 16 times!, winning 10 Championships, and missing the playoffs only twice.
They can reload, but they ain't getting Howard. I can name two teams with better offers for DH than the Lakers. The Thunder and Bulls for sure.
I think it could come down to prestige though. Look at the long line of Laker big men. With that said, the Lakers have Bynum who's health is always in question, so who knows.
Almost everyone makes the playoffs. I'm not convinced that TV (CBS, ABC, EPSN whoever) doesn't "make sure" the big city teams make the playoffs.
You mean like the Knicks?
About 1/2 the teams make the playoffs so that's a good insight.
The big market vs. small market conspiracy would require us to ignore Detroit, San Antonio & Houstons success and the huge stretches of dismal despair for big market teams like Chicago, Miami and ESPECIALLY the Knicks.
Lebron playing his first 6+ years or so with Cleveland should also blast that theory to bits.

They've had an amazing run, no question about it. Largely keyed in the last 10+ years by Shaq wanting to go Hollywood (people forget his film\movie aspirations....<shudder>) and then some savy drafts\trades.
Frankly though the recent talk of Howard etc. are more of a pipe-dream. The league has changed and the Lakers are really capped right now. I suspect they will have some tougher years heading into Kobe's twilight....he will probably wind up demanding a trade out of frustration and play bench in his late 30's for contenders.
it's amazing, when the Lakers traded Shaq in 2004, they struggled for, oh, a few years, missed the playoffs the following year, and lost in the first round of the playoffs for 2 years in a row after that, and then they make the NBA Finals for 3 straight years in a row, losing the first one and winning the next 2, thats ridiculously insane, most professional sports teams end up regretting a superstar player, which causes them to miss the playoffs for nearly a decade or more, go more than a decade without a championship, this never seems to happen to the Lakers.
