They will pay at least one really big tax bill. However, once Kobe and Pau's contracts comes off the books in the summer of 2014 things will get easier (tax bill wise). Nash's contract comes off the next season. I can't see any NBA players making $30 million a year again anytime soon. The new CBA killed those kinds of paydays.
The Lakers will have to strip their team down one good time in the next few years just to avoid the repeater tax. Assuming Howard stays, I can see a season or two where it is him and a bunch of nobodies.
Hard to say and you make some good points and that's exactly where the fascination lies.
What happens as kobe ages and the post-kobe era begins?
Maybe they just transition like kareem to magic? Maybe all hell breaks loose?
I sure don't know, I just know it's fasicnating as heck.
Gotta wonder how the Lakers would've performed had there been no drama with Dwight, Nash played a little and everyone stayed healthy for a few seasons.

a lot of that drama wasnt howard, but kobe (much like kobe with your boy shaq), nash should have never been traded for in the 1st place, and bringing in dantoni was a TERRIBLE coaching change.
more to things than just a little drama, thats just poor management.

Yeah, coaching change like what? 8 games into the season?
The Nash trade was very lucrative for Pheonix that managed to unload a well over the hill Nash for all-nba trade value.
Also the management that got nothing in trade for gasol.
But don't worry...these are the guys that are going to instantly rebuild the lakers to contention via free agency.
Honestly, 3 years from now..and theyll be relevant again. Winning begets winning. Everyone wants to play for the Lakers. Hollywood, fame, money, legacy etc etc
And Im a sonics fan...i could never figure out if i hated the blazers or lakers more.
That gasol trade wss fixed, and had cp3 been allowed to go to the lakers...theyd be just as relevant as anybody.

whos "everybody"???
not exactly a long list of free agents lining up to sign there. maybe once kobe is gone, and/or his contract is gone, outside of that, they are not exactly laying the wealth down. throw in the crazy taxes, the terrible traffic, the fact the state is on water rationing and no relief in sight, people are flocking AWAY from hollywood.

The biggest factor was injuries. How much of the season did Nash, Kobe, Howard, World Peace and Gasol actually play together? Not saying they would've been world beaters, but likely much better...maybe a 55+ win team which ain't bad out west.
So much money to spend for one.
For two theyre the Lakers, people wanna play for Lakers.
For three the yare in L.A., people like to live in L.A.
For four they have a huge, dedicated fanbase, so if you want exposure, there's that too.

Kobe will be gone soon enough, theres a reason dwight signed, why cp3 signed, why karl malone signed...theres a reason theyve won 17 or 18 or however many championships. The Lakers are an international brand, its about endorsements..much easier to build your brand in la than..milwaukie. la equals exposure (on an international level) which means endorsements which means money. Its about star power. Its about fame. If you are a laker, you go out and at night in a la and you get into all the clubs, you talk to celebrities, you rub shoulders with whoever is who in hollywood. People are attracted to that. Young black men who grew up in the ghettos especially. At 17 youre in s. Side chicago or baltimore worried about if you might get shot, the next youre living it up with will smith and jack nicholson? Flirting with beyonce, sleeping with iggy azaela? Theres a reason women line up to be Laker girls, and not so much...raptor girls.
You honestly think that to a 22 year old looking for his first major contract his concern is "taxes" and "water rationing"? In one paycheck, he makes more than what his momma made the last year..he doesnt care
The Lakers will be back. And its not like I particularly like that..but, it is what it is.
The clippers should go to seattle. That would be a dream..
