Which is jumping on a team early in the first quarter and building a 20 point lead and having their team use up all their energy only to have that other team in the second half come back and win the game. Part of the problem with jumping on any NBA team early is it's very hard to maintain a 20 point lead for 4 quarters against any NBA team. So you know in a playoff game it's definitely going to be a hard thing to do.

The Celtics jumped out on the Sixers 24-6 in the 1st qtr and used up all their energy building and protecting their lead in the 1st half because in the 3rd quarter they couldn't buy a bucket.

Same thing with the Clippers, they were up 33-11 and then had trouble maintaining the lead and only up 10 at the half. Then in the 3rd qtr, they could not score because they used up all their energy in the 1st half.

It's amazing that the Celtics and Clippers were trying to WIN the game in the 1st quarter.

Here is a stat from the Celtics/Sixers series that shows winning in the 1st quarter means nothing.

Game 1...Sixers led after first quarter......loss the game

Game 2....Celtics led after first quarter.....loss the game

Game 3.....Sixers led after first quarter.......loss the game

Game 4.....Celtics led after first quarter......loss the game

No need to build a 20 point lead in the first quarter because most times it won't last.

The Clips didn't use up their energy...they just flat out don't have any game if their human pogo sticks aren't getting out for dunks. Well, that and the Spurs "D" is too good once they lock in, so game over for the Clips. Growing up and developing their games will cure that for them. That factoid about DeAndre Jordan having scored TWICE in his four seasons from outside the paint was..interesting?

As for the East...Sixers can't shoot straight and Celtics can't do so consistently, either. Seeing some scores there, I haven't been watching. Oh well.

This should be expected. It's not like the Kings or Warriors or Bobcats are out there playing and rolling over.

Let's just call it what it is. The Clippers aren't as good as people are making them out to be. They have the potential of being a great team for years to come, but Deandre Jordan and Blake Griffin aren't refined offensively enough to allow them to have any advantage inside. People act as though, the regular season is similar to the postseason, it's not. These guys are going against much tougher competition and players who are more capable of keeping them from getting oops. If the Clippers want to make that next step, they need Blake and Deandre to develop go-to moves offensively and to do more than dunk. Clearly that isn't going to win very many games in the playoffs.

its not a "strategy"!!!!! its just how the game plays out. no coach sets up a "strategy" of "ok guys we are going to go out there and use every once of energy we have to get a 20 point lead in the 1st quarter! " they go with the "strategy' of "lets go out there and play as hard as we can and try to be in the lead at the end of every quarter.

interesting "factoid" there have only been 3 QUARTERS the spurs where not in the lead in the entire playoffs. they where down at the end of the 3rd last night, and the 1st and 2nd of game 3 saturday. they have lead at the end of every other quarter in the playoffs.

I agree with this statement. Once the Spurs figure them out and lock them down defensivly then its a wrap for the Clippers

As a coach, how do you prevent your team from building such a big lead? Tell them to miss some shots??? turn the ball over a few more times?? i don't get it. The game flows that way sometimes..

In both the Celtics and Clippers game, they seemed to be in a hurry to score points and were fast breaking and running and scoring and running some more and scoring and we sat there like...."why are they trying to win the game in the 1st qtr.". It appeared they were trying to run away with the game and it was so early so it didn't make sense at all. No a coach shouldn't tell his team to miss shots but he should be telling them it's a long game and not to try and throw a haymaker so early in the contest. So it wasn't that they should have missed shots, they were trying to score in a hurry and run away from the Sixers and Spurs so early and it didn't make sense. You have to stay within the flow of the game and know that trying to go on a run to win the game in the 1st quarter is stupid and that's why both teams used up all their energy and didn't have any left to fight off the comeback.

This is what Vinny Del Negro and Doc Rivers should have told their teams once they were up early in the 1st qtr.

"Ok listen, we have a big lead and the clock is our friend right now so what we wanna do is slow the game down and not turn over the ball. No need to speed the game up because they have to catch up to us and that's why we are going to make this a half court type of game for the rest of the half."

If neither coach said that then I don't know what they get paid for

The Clippers still want to fast break and throw lop passes instead of slowing the game down and using the shot clock wisely.
