I don't follow basketball closely, but I seem to remember that a player could take only two steps after a dribble before he had to dribble again. It seems that now three steps are commonly allowed, and I think I just saw a four step drive and basket in the MIA-OKC game, with no travelling call. Are the rules different now? It seems to be most tolerated on a drive to the basket. Is there a different rule for that play?

It is one of the most inconsistently called calls in the league. The refs call it when they feel like it. Seem like it happens almost every play. I heard a few years ago that they had planned on cracking down on it, but they never do.

Similar to "pushing off" calls. In the last few minutes of the MIA/OKC game L. James pushed off 3 times to get around the defender.

I've seen players stop dribbling at halfcourt and go in for a layup without getting called for traveling. The inattention to the rules of the game is one of the reasons I don't enjoy basketball, especially the NBA, anymore.
