When I was about 10 or 11, soccer was a bigger sport than basketball in Barbados. I don't think that's true today. You're more likely to find a pickup basketball game in the West Indies than a pickup soccer game nowadays.

Basketball is indeed taking over the world. It's an easy sport to play, involving only a round ball. Just like soccer (football).

Sounds like you're caught up in the moment of the NBA finals.

Back to the regularly scheduled program.

Trust me, soccer/futbol is still the most popular game in the world outside the U.S . If you thought the NBA Finals was big, wait till you see the World Cup. Kids all over the Europe, Asia, and Africa still think about soccer first.

Yeah, but basketball is spreading fast. Just think about how the world has been able to close the gap on us in such a short period of time. In 1992, the Dream Team was destroying all of its competition. By 2004, Puerto Rico and Argentina would be handing us devastating losses. The Greeks embarassed us in international play shortly thereafter.

I would not be surprised if basketball overtakes soccer in China in the next few decades. China has only qualified for one World Cup and didn't even score a single goal during the event. The Chinese so far have had more success in basketball. I would imagine that Yao Ming has got to be the most famous Chinese athlete ever. And if Linsanity can improve and put up good numbers over the next few seasons, you're going to see 1.3 billion people become even more basketball crazed than they already are.

China is a good possibility in 20 years or so....and maybe certain parts of Africa in a few decades, but i don't see it happening in my lifetime as far as Europe and other parts of SE Asia.

Soccer is still the easiest sport to play anywhere at any time. You need a hoop for basketball and a ball that can be bounced easily. Soccer is a lot easier to play and the ball can be made out of a lot of different things.

I don't think has anything to do with what the OP is saying... Just because Soccer is easier to play has nothing to do with whether Basketball is catching up as the most popular sport.
