There's been plenty of talk regarding the Lakers, which is understandable as they are the Hollywood soap opera of professional sports. But I think the Celtics will be an interesting case this offseason as well. Will Garnett hang it up? Will Pierce stick around for another two seasons in Boston? Is a team with its future built on the shoulders of a hot-headed Rondo hopelessly doomed?

as a celtics fan, I really think they are done, even if rondo is here, perkins and allen never left, and they still had their core from 08, they still can not compete with the heat.

I think KG and pierce will play out their careers in boston, and get new talent. i mean, in 07 Danny ainge gambled for championship right now and think about future later (gave up a young al jefferson for a old KG). time has been up, and i think the 09 season was their last in terms of hope, everyone is just too old now.

Garnett has a no trade clause and Pierce's trade value is questionable. I don't see many options beside letting these guys come back and start rebuilding next year when Pierce and garnett are ready to retire.

I don't see why both wouldn't just retire and go into broadcasting since they had long successful careers and 1 NBA ring.

I mean what else do they have to accomplish at this point?

Pierce has 1 more contract year. Garnett has 2.

No way they will retire as some suggest....with those big paydays hanging out there.

Just like with the Lakers....next season has to pass before a rebuild can start.

Next year for Pierce(5 million buyout) isn't guaranteed, and they can amnesty Garnett if they want. I'm not sure what's out there on the FA market for them though.

True. They could amnesty Garnett etc. and try to start rebuilding now.

Wouldn't shock me if they sit down and talk with Pierce and Garnett about what they want the team to do.

They might be able to trade garnett, tough but not impossible.

He has a no trade though.

Right. But it's not like Boston is going anywhere and they might be able to find a more competitive home for him.

Hence why I think they will sit down and hash it out with Pierce and Garnett.

Also, if they waive Garnett doesn't he have to go to the team that picks him up?

Meaning he might approve a trade instead of getting thrown into the amnesty pool.

However, I don't see the celts doing something like that and angering powerful agents and giving their player treatment reputation a black-eye.

A few Boston players have thrown about hints suggesting that Garnett is retiring this year( of course it's just speculation until you hear it from him directly). Pierce is still playing at a high enough level but in his 36th year, obviously no longer a foundation for any rebuilding project. Their most valuable asset is obviously Rondo, not sure if he's the kind of talent you can build around though. The Celtics could be in for some lean years until they retool themselves into contenders again, similar to the 90's after the Bird/Mchale/Parish era.
