Not actually how their careers and body of work turned out, but the hype that surrounded how good of a potential player they were and how much of a savior they could potentially be to that franchise. How assured they were of being the undisputed #1 pick no matter who won the lottery.

Here's mine...

1) Patrick Ewing '85
2) Shaquille O'Neal '92
3) LeBron '03
4) David Robinson '87
5) Danny Manning '88

Actual order in terms of what they brought to that franchise ...

1) Tim Duncan '97
2) Ewing
3) Allen Iverson '96
4) Robinson
5) LeBron

Not a surefire #1 pick. They were considering Durant too, but probably the most anticipated since then. I would say easily actually.

I'm going to say David Robinson and Ralph Sampson. Both were incredible in college and heavily hyped to bring their future pro teams to glory. It seems critics were unanimous about both of them being sure-things, and they didn't mention any weaknesses.

The outcome was different, but that's for another thread.

Ehh. In my opinion (no offense to Lenny), not that ballyhooed as some of the others. Brad Daugherety was drafted over him. BD was far from a monster.

Sampson was not in the lottery era, but easily up there. I find it interesting that of all the #1 lottery picks (since 1985) only two delivered a championship to their ORIGINAL team ... Duncan and Robinson. Incidentally, the Spurs are the only team to win a title since 1985 after drafting #1.

The #1 pick really isn't worth as much to your team as people think.

Anthony Davis is the most recent example. And while he wasn't necessarily seen as a "savior" to the franchise, Yao Ming was drafted with an incredible amount of international hype.
