Wasn't really sure about the DAJ signing but it was at least an upgrade from Tyson Chandler. But now we have no Jordan, and no Chandler. However, we have just traded for Zaza Pachulia. Like slo1318 said, the Deron Williams signing could have been crucial five years ago, but I don't know how big of a star he is anymore. But I'm not doubting him, I wouldn't be surprised to see a revival in D-Will!

I hope he bounces back. His decline over the past few years is just unheard of. He was a legitimate choice as best PG in the NBA, and is still young. He is a headcase for coaches though. Hopefully, he's matured enough over the past few years to understand that he needs to change his ways, and Carlisle is a good coach.
BTW, completely off topic................ But is anyone else surprised that Jerry Sloan hasn't coached since leaving Utah? He is a HOF coach, and it seems like he's never been mentioned for any job.
I have to question Dallas here. I know they feel jilted, but what was the point of handing Wes Matthews even more money simply because Jordan left? And Pachulia and Williams? Essentially, you're going to fight for an 8 seed. I'd rather be the 76ers right now than Dallas because what long-term assets does Dallas have? Historically, Dallas has built through the draft but Cuban has given himself the idea that it's a market that free agents are interested in and unfortunately, they're going to find themselves stuck in another year of mediocrity with a nearly worthless draft choice.

Carlisle is a good coach. I hate that he's been getting some doubt because of the whole Rajon Rondo mess. Hopefully Deron Williams will have a better understanding of who's boss.
And about Jerry Sloan, great coach but at 73 I think he's enjoying retirement.
the last draft pick to amount to anything was josh howard. hell dirk wasnt even drafted by dallas.
even last years picks are gone.
Big picture on two things.
1. Dallas didn't become a "perennial" contender through free agency. They became a contender because of Dirk Nowitzki, who even though he was drafted by Milwaukee, was swapped on the same day for Robert Traylor. That absolutely is considered building through the draft. Even unsuccessful Maverick teams still drafted well going back to Jason Kidd, Jim Jackson, and Jamal Mashburn.
2. Dallas as of late hasn't had the opportunity or the ability to build through the draft due to their winning seasons and their dealing of draft picks. You're making my point for me on your second sentence.
Dallas has been sliding backward for a few years now and appear almost irrelevant but instead of reverting toward finding a way to acquire high draft picks (i.e. by sucking or selling off assets to re-tool and accomplishing both), they're holding on to this notion that they're going to acquire top-flight free agents in an effort to continue winning.
Their M.O. at this point is essentially finding over-the-hill free agent to pair with Dirk. If you can't attract top talent through free agency because you're not the most desirable market to be in, then it's imperative you go back to finding your blue chip through the draft. If I'm a Maverick fan, I sure hope they realize they need to do that.

I agree, most teams build through the draft or by trading the picks they get through the draft.
THere are very few "detination locations" for free agents other than teams that have their crap together and keep on doing so instead of either bringing in bad trades or vice-versa.

It boils down to what you feel is important.
Thus I 100% agree with you.
If being competitive is enough in the glow of a recent championship then sure....
If the goal is winning a championship in the coming 1-3 years then yeah, it sucks.
Me personally, I'd rather be a bottom 3 team for 10 years and then a champ than hanging around getting beat in the 1st and 2nd round.
Hey, just my 2 cents. I'd love to be a franchise owner and have these choices though.
