I saw tonight on ESPN that the Cavs and Celtics play each other on October 17th which is the start of the NBA regular season. Isn't that normally the preseason and the regular season starts on Oct 31st or Nov 1st? Did the league office make some changes in the last few months to start the season earlier?

The Cavs last 4 opening day starts were

Oct 30, 2013
Oct 30, 2014
Oct 27, 2015
Oct 25, 2016

So what is this October 17th start all about?

I noticed that earlier, too! I also checked OKC's schedule, and they have a nationally televised regular season game on the 19th. Apparently the NBA regular season is starting earlier this year. I remember there being talk about shortening the preseason; apparently that happened? Preseason is just a few games in early October, and regular season now starts mid-October instead of late in the month.

If it wasn't for this Kyrie/Isiah trade I would have never known the season started earlier.

I posted an article a couple of weeks ago about this.
The NBA is starting earlier and adjusting schedules to reduce the number of back to backs, 4 in 5s and 5 in 7s.

Their answer to reduce teams resting players.

They moved up the start of the regular season to lower the number of back-to-backs, which is one thing I actually agree with. Also new rules have lowered the number of momentum killing time outs, especially towards the very end of games.

We are only without hoops for 4 months. If you watch preseason/summer league, maybe 3 months.

I'm more into college hoops (Duke and UNC) through Jan/Feb. This year there will be a few things worth watching early in the season though - Paul/Harden, how the Cavs do, Kyrie with Celtics, George/Westbrook, Lonzo and a few teams with a lot of young talent.
