Simmons playoff stats:
16.3 points
9.4 rebounds
7.7 assists
1.7 steals
0.8 blocks
.488 field
.707 free-throws

Notice how almost everybody thought Simmons would be a liability at the free-throw line in the playoffs....but he shot .707 and 5.8 attempts per game....
Simmons FT% is better than Embiid!
His passing was a liability instead.
He was not a Point Guard in college, so his lack of PG experience finally showed.

Both of these posts miss reality: Simmons needs to expand his game. Tatum's role is more limited, and he can handle that at this point in his career. The 76ers handed the keys to Simmons, but he needs more tools to be ready to drive the car.

I think your evaluation misses reality.

Is there any doubt that Tatum COMPLETElY outplayed Simmons in their recent series??

Tatum is younger than Simmons and already has a more complete game and at this point looks to have more upside/higher ceiling...

Simmons shot is gawd awful....did he even score a basket from more than 6 inches away from the hoop in this series? Didn't seem like it and while many seem to think the "shot will come" that doesn't often happen..

Tatum's role may have been more limited to start the season but at this point he is playing more minutes than anyone on the Celts and the entire offense is often running through him....most importantly he responded particularly in the 4th quarters...Simmons didn't....simple as that...

Simmons' free-throw shooting has been described as worthy of hack-a-shaq tactics, so the fact that he's already improved it to 70% and in the pressure-cooker atmosphere of playoffs especially proves he can definitely become a jump-shooter very soon.

He's obviously a very fast learner, and he went from being a Forward in college to being a starting Point Guard in the NBA and even drew Magic Johnson comparisons.

But I'd prefer he play Forward, because his potential as a scorer is unlimited....he already averaged 16ppg without a lick of shooting.

Plus I think McConnell is deeply underrated, the man has A+ ball control, error-free passing and excellent shooting, basically John Stockton without the elite court vision/elite defense.

Tatum's role is just simpler--and he is surrounded by better veteran talent. If Simmons develops a mid-range shot off of the dribble, his ceiling will be way beyond Tatum's.

We don't know if Simmons' shot will come. That is the big question mark in his future.

Ben Simmons is awesome. Another absolute beast of a performance last night, for which I had the pleasure of being in attendance. I believe he was two assists away from a triple-double.

That's because he didn't have Kawhi slapping the ball out of his mitts every other time he handled it.

If Simmons learns to shoot and stays healthy, he could become one of the all-time greats.

Simmons with his slashing ability alone would average over 20ppg this season if he chose to.
He wouldn't need a jump shot.
The issue is free-throws, because if he shot 70% from the free-throw-line he'd be more inclined to drive.
Because he's shooting only 60% he's not keen on drawing contact.
With his unstoppable drive, he could lead the NBA in free-throw attempts, because the defense has no answer other than to foul.
So I see no need for perimeter shooting, if he can get his free-throw shooting to about 70%.
