Always the unwritten rules by lazy voters, meaning since Michigan St was #2, they will be #1 come Monday. MSU lost to Duke, but by the time Duke lost, I think MSU was just below Duke. In my world, overall body of work matters most. Therefore Arizona State should have been #1 before losing to Arizona; and I'd still keep them there. A close lose at Arizona doesn't warrant enough to slide them out of the top spot. But my opinion of course doesn't matter.

BTW, first time since the late 1940s that not a single I-A school made it to the New Year unblemished; strange that 3 were a game away but had to face what was probably one of its very toughest conference games of the season.

Looks like kenpom still has Villanova #1 despite their best wins being over 12-3 Gonzaga/Butler.

Villanova, my alma mater, is still ranked #1 in both the AP, and Coaches poll. I do think their schedule is a little soft this year though.

I'm not a big college ball fan so excuse my ignorance but I understand how critical the football rankings are but for basketball aren't they rather moot if a team is a #1 or #3 etc due to the bracket seedings?

Just talking in general.

If it's mostly bragging rights then I get that, but if it's something else I'm just not well informed as to what it is. ???

It can matter, but is rather hard to define. It depends who is battling for a one seed, but geographically might be in the same region of the country; and then where the sites are to be held for every regional that season. So maybe you end up with more of a home court advantage, maybe not. Theoretically too, you should be competing against an easier #2 seed if form holds if you are the overall #1 seed, etc.. . But as we know, there isn't an overwhelming amount of "chalk" most years and at that point, one is just splitting hairs trying to make that argument. I think the potential favorable destination you get assigned to is all that can matter.

At this point it means about nothing. Granted, if you’re say top 15 at this point in the season than odds are you’ll be getting decent seeding in the tourney even if you slip up a little bit in conference play. Get on a course for being a bubble team or 4+ seed and the road to the final four becomes significantly more difficult. For blue bloods like Duke, UNC or Kentucky there might be some historical bragging rights as far as weeks ranked #1, top 5, top 10, etc (I believe Duke and UCLA are currently tied for most weeks at #1).

Only the 12th time in Bill Self’s tenure that a visiting team has done this:

Love what Chris Beard has done, and have to give credit to Tubby Smith for turning things around.

It's early in the conference slate, but I think that incredible streak of Big 12 titles is in big jeopardy. When you consider too Trae Young and Oklahoma's stellar play lately, plus TCU, there are two more legit teams nobody expected in the Big 12.
