It's all about the Benjamins.

Ironic that college basketball may feature a watered-down postseason product (debatable whether it is now) while CFB is stuck with a 2 team championship.

I disagree! March Madness is fun to watch but the college basketball regular season is incredibly borning and meaningless and it will become even more meaningless if 96 teams can compete...then what's the point of the regular season if every major conference team can make the tournament.

That's a surprisingly easy question to answer. The point is television ratings. (And you thought it had something to do with basketball? As we say here in New York, fuhgeddaboudit!)
