Caa thanks for the detailed and direct answer to my question. Very helpful. How far are you from prairieville and what is your opinon of that area? Not to jump to a totally different area but we also have job opportunities in the Covington/Madisonville area. Any input on these areas?

I used to work in Covington before working in Baton Rouge (I live in Hammond, 25 min from Covington). The Covington/Mandeville area is nice, upscale, and actually a little stuck up. But it's quaint, just across the lake from New Orleans, has decent places to eat, and nice and upcoming shopping. Actually, alot of people commute from Mande/Covington to New Orleans for work. Madisonville is also pretty, alot of the properties are around water, the Tchefuncte River which goes out to Lake Ponchartrain. These areas on the Northshore are good for sportsmans and boating. Covington has St. Tammany Hospital, which is great! The only thing about these areas is it is condensed and busy during the workweek for commuting. Abita Springs, Lacombe, Bedico etc. are some outlying areas for living.

dcs930 thanks for info. Really don't care for Mandeville but do like the Madisonville area and area between Covington and Folsom. Did you have children in school there. Here Madisonville elementary/middle and Covington elementary thru HS are both good public schools. Any input on schools. Is it an area you would move back to if given the chance? I did some per diem work at St. Tammany and reaaly liked the hospital. Compared to Hattiesburg, traffic is about the same as the covington area or maybe even worse.

I am 26 year old male. I just finished my MS and I have a job offer in Baton Rouge. I am trying to decide if it is right for me. I have been reading a lot of opinions on this website. I am confused by the above statements. Can you explain what you mean by this please or show me an example of what you are talking about.

Thanks you

My point was , there are several members here that never miss an opportunity to bash Baton Rouge . Their " agenda " is a personal dislike for B.R. for some unknown reason , and they want to dissuade others from living or visiting here .

ChemEngin I am from BR but have not lived there for over 30 years. My wife also is from BR but has only been away for about 8 years. Both of our families are there. We greatly miss south La. I am new to this site and found it while randomly searching some general info on BR and local towns. After reading multiple post you could find a pattern from some peoples posting. What I meant by the agenda people is that they are people who would rather bash a people and there culture because it does not fit there lifestyle. They come to BR and find it does not fit there little world so they deem it an inferior place to live. South La. culture is different but it is not inferior. There are several areas around BR such as Prairieville, Central, Zachary, St. Francisville Etc. I would suggest looking. That is what my wife and I are doing. BR proper has changed alot since I left but there are still many desirable places to live. What hobbies do you have? Have you checked out Lafayette to the west or Covington/Mandeville/Madisonville to the east. Each about an hour either way.

At least on this forum, there are 2 groups of people. Those who love Baton Rouge, and those who dislike it. Those who love Baton Rouge tend to be from the area and those who dislike BR tend to be transplants.

I have not had a good experience in BR and most of the transplants I have met (not on this forum) echo the same sentiments. But that being said, to each is own.

Baton Rouge is a small city with a small town mentality. It is not very urban, most places are rural or ruralish/suburban. You need a car to drive everywhere. It is also a huge college town in mentality. Those things really aren't for me so that's why I haven't had a great experience here.

I think you need to evaluate what you are looking for. If you are a very religious Christian, a huge college football fan, or big into outdoor activities, you will probably fit in well because those interests will help you.

In my opinion, it really depends on the neighborhood in which you decide to live. Right now, I live in a pretty bad neighborhood. While some on here will claim I'm a liar and BR hater, I do hear gun shots from my apartment a few times a month. I don't appreciate that. I am aware that I can move, I just can't afford to do so right now. I do like Baton Rouge and thoroughly enjoy myself here as it suits my needs for entertainment, shopping, eating out, etc, but if I had a family and kids to think about, things would be very different. Without a doubt, I'd move out to a suburb because I feel that would be best suiting.

If you and your wife want to move back, power to yall! I hope you find everything you're looking for.
Before I forget... Lane is known to be quite the death trap =/
