Default Husband to be based in Hammond, LA. Where should we look to live?

My husband just got based in Hammond, LA as a pilot with US Customs and Border Protection. We are relocating from Miami Beach. Quite a change. I'm excited for a new adventure. I know nothing about LA, except for a couple of vacations to NO. I just graduated with my MSN in Nursing Anesthesia this December, so I will be looking for employment in a hospital setting that employs CRNAs. I have an upcoming interview in Baton Rouge and was wondering what areas are nice between there and Hammond. I'm a city girl so I sure would like to find a place with nice restaurants, shopping, and a modern health club. I like quaint and charming neighborhoods. No row houses or cookie cutter communities for me. Love outdoor sports. Area with parks or hiking would be ideal. How is the traffic in LA? Commute from Baton Rouge to Hammond? Somewhere in between? Just looking for anywhere to begin our search. I'm also trying to line up interviews in Northshore area hospitals as I love the vicinity to the lake and the towns of St. Tammany look appealing with good schools. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Assuming he will be working around the Hammond airport? St. Tammany Parish is nice to live. Covington is about 20 miles from the Hammond airport, and he can travel down Hwy 190 for easy commuting. Mandeville is upperscale, and has very nice subdivisions, shopping, dining, etc. The Covington/Mande area has nice schools.

Covington has St. Tammany Regional Hospital (great system!), and Ocshner offices. Mandeville has Lakeview Regional. The real-estate costs in St. Tammany is higher than Tangipahoa. In Tangi, it's more quaint, and Hammond is the main hub. It is a college town so there is shopping, and dining. Hammond has North Oaks Health System. SLU is in Hammond, which is a good college. I am a graduate from SLU and it's very convenient and it's not over-populated. Hammond is equal distance from Baton Rouge and New Orleans, so visiting either would be roughly the same travel time. Welcome to Tangipahoa Parish!

If you move towards Baton Rouge, there's Livingston Parish. Great school system! Very quaint, and country-like. It's between Hammond and Baton Rouge, so you would have to travel to either for shopping, dining, entertainment. The closer you get to BR, the further your husband's commute would be to work, as well as yourself if you work in Hammond.
Hope this helps! If you have any more questions, feel free to message me. I live in Hammond, and I commute to Baton Rouge to work. I have also worked in Covington and Mandeville, so I am familiar with this entire area!

Default How long is your commute b/w BR and Hammond?

Thank you so much for the valuable info. Can you tell me how long does it take you to commute to and from Hammond. What hours are you on the road?
I have an upcoming interview with an Anesthesia group who provides services to both Our Lady of the Lake hospital and Oschner in BR. I would love to find a position in Hammond or Covington/Mandeville area, but have not had any leads so far. The area looks lovely. What do you know about Denham Springs? I'm a city girl so this is going to be quite a change. But I'm looking forward to it. Oh and thanks for the info on St. Tammany regional-I'm going to look into it right away!.

I'll give your husband a hint: Check the trains out. I've personally witnessed immigrants (not sure if they were legal or not) hop off the train in downtown Hammond with duffel bags. They were in those containers that hold raw materials. No doors on the outside, its like a big tub.

OLOL is actually about 1/4 mile from where I work on Essen Lane. It takes me 1 hour to get from my house to my work parking lot on a regular work day. Some days may be longer if there is a wreck en route. I leave my house btwn 6:15-6:30am to be at work for 7:30am. Fridays it takes 50 minutes. Alot of businesses work 4-10's with Friday off, so it makes traffic a little better.
On I-12 the westbound traffic begins around the Juban Rd exit (first Denham Springs exit coming from the East into BR). I make it to that exit roughly about 7:00am. The Denham onramp (two lanes) is what congests the interstate, in connection with the bridge construction right after the DS onramp. There are onramp meters (traffic lights that allow one car at a time to merge) at the Denham onramp. According to which direction you come from in Denham, you may sit through a couple traffic lights to have your turn to get onto the interstate. The bulk of the morning traffic is 6:45-8:30, around school times. I really believe the early morning commuters (like plant workers, BRgov) have a less stressful traffic commute, because they are not included in the school time traffic.
I personally considered Denham Springs to live, because Livingston Parish is nice, quaint, its suburban, and the school system is good. If you commute into BR, I would not live any further East than Denham Springs because of the peak hour traffic. (Walker, Holden, Tangipahoa Parish) Coming from Denham, there really are no other feeder roads to take to avoid the interstate. Especially if you will commute to OLOL.
At non-peak hours, my commute from my house in Hammond to BR is 45 minutes at the most!
They are widening the interstate. So one day the outrageous incoming and outgoing traffic will hopefully be resolved. For your husband, DS to Hammond (morning or evening traffic) is a straight shot, probably 30-35 minutes (since the airport is on the eastside of Hammond).
BTW- If you're worried about the transition from Miami, I would consider living in Denham, other than Hammond. Baton Rouge is the second most populated city in Louisiana (NOLA being first), and Denham is just outside of it. http://www.city-data.com/city/Baton-...Louisiana.html
