My husband is thinking about accepting an a job in Civil Engineering and Design with DoTD. We'd have to relocate from eastern Virginia. I'm expecting our first baby in September.

Can anyone advise us on where in Baton Rouge to start looking for a house?

Thank you!

What's your budget? Are you willing to commute from the suburbs?

Income would be a little over $100,000 a year. We have $55,000 in savings. Two cars. I'll be a SAHM. He's willing to commute from the suburbs. We only plan on having two children, so a very large house isn't necessary.

There are plenty of subdivisions in Ascension parish, Livingston parish, and Shenandoah, Central and Zachary (East Baton Rouge Parish).

There's lots of areas to choose from. Keep in mind that Baton Rouge public schools are a mess, so you'll want to be sure to budget private schools for the kids, or live in Ascension or Livingston so that good public schools are available. If you live in Ascension or Livingston, your husband will likely have a 45 minute to one hour commute each day.

Probably the closest acceptable area for y'all would be Southdowns. Its a great neighborhood, but the homes are older. Kenilworth is another good area a little further out that you may want to consider. Commute would be anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes depending on traffic.

Some of the best public schools in the state are in Central . It's independant of the EBR system . Easy commute to the DOTD .

Construction has just begun on a new elementary and middle school complex .

Since your child won;t be ready for school right away, you have plenty of choices because you can always move right before you child hits kindergarten. If you live in Baton Rouge then you have to factor in private school because the public schools are not very good. As others mentioned there are some good public schools in the outlying suburbs. We chose Zachary because they were far and away rated the best public school in LA. But the taxes are higher and the commute is at least 30 minutes to LSU in non peak traffic times.
