Exclamation Moving, Need help

My husband, 2 kids (4 & 6) and I are moving to Prairieville (Baton Rouge), LA. Soon, we already have our house. But I would like to know all the pros and cons. I know Oak Grove and adventure land is a great school. But what about culture. My biggest question is How is the BR going to be a positive on my kids. What is there to help them grow and learn?

?? How does a city help a child learn and grow? That's the responsibility of the parents and the schools, is it not?

And you could provide some more details like: where are you moving from? have you visited the area? what kind of "culture" do you want? etc.

Certainly surrounding culture in any given city has an effect on the upbringing of children. I'm not sure where you are coming from, but I will state a few pros and cons for you from my standpoint of southern LA culture.

Pros: 1. Baton Rouge is a very family centric place. People are generally very friendly and hospitable, and there is a certain southern charm/innocence to growing up here. 2. Baton Rouge/New Orleans culture, centered around food, music, entertainment, tailgaiting etc has a unique feel to it. Most friends that I've had visit from out of state/country are pleasantly surprised by it.

Cons: 1. A good number of folks in Baton Rouge can be small minded. Be prepared for lots of "born and raised" types that have never left the city limits. Not saying they are bad people, but its certainly not a worldly place, or progressive in any way. Progressive types are the minority by far. 2. The city itself does not offer a ton of amenities in the way of museums, exhibits, etc. New Orleans has a handful of decent options, but BR is lacking in my opinion.

I'll stop with those. If you have more specific questions let me know. I think its possible to be happy in this region, but that will of course depend on your expectations and desires! =)

Unbelievable . Where do you people get this nonsense from ? This isn't 1965 , friend . Stop repeating this tired old line that the out of town folks keep throwing out .

wow. What an ignorant thing to say. There are ignorant people all over this planet, yet you think they reside in Baton Rouge moreso than elsewhere? How about you provide some facts to back up that ridiculous suggestion?

I find nothing wrong with that assessment. If he said it were full of small minded people I would have a problem.

My comment was not a personal attack directed towards anyone in particular, so I apologize if it was taken in such a way. As this is a public online forum, I was just expressing my opinion. Ignorance knows no boundaries, and I'm not implying that BR is some kind of ignorance stronghold. However, I often directly witness comments that are prejudice, to a greater extent than I have experienced in other cities. I know this can be a shock to people from larger cities, as I know several people that have commented to me directly on the issue. That is my experience and observation, and that alone makes it a valid comment on this site. You in turn, have a right to agree or disagree (preferably with tact).

Again, my wording may have been poor and it certainly wasn't a personal attack. I enjoy living in Baton Rouge for the most part, and think it has a lot of potential. I think the original poster can look forward to making a home here.

.
When coming from larger and more liberal/progressive cities you will notice more small minded people, not exclusive to Baton Rouge.

And people in smaller cities notice ignorant liberals. It works both ways.
