I grew up right outside of Jennings. Small, decent school, safe, a good place to raise kids.

I am retired and am considering a move to Baton Rouge
I would like a safe but diverse neighborhood. The more diverse the better. I am looking for a small older home without a lot of land. Any suggestions?

Southdowns (Watch out, it's expensive for what you get)
College Town (near the south gates of LSU, also expensive)
are a couple of neighborhoods which come to mind.....

We are relocating from Florida to Louisana due to a corporate relocation. BR doesn't look like the nicest place but I will be working up by St Francisville and have been researching living up there or in Zachary. Any insight anyone could provide would be appreciated. When my wife was in Zachary she said everyone was very nice and kept talking about the schools there.

Zachary is an up and coming town due to its breaking away from the East Baton Rouge Parish schools. Only thing, though, is that they're talking about putting a moratorium on new subdivisions.
To me, St. Francisville is the nicer town and a straighter shot (via mostly 4 lanes of US 61) to BR. Plus, the Riverbend power plant provides a solid tax base for the W. Feliciana Parish schools.

Baton Rouge
I think baton Rouge is just fine for raising a family! I did not-repeat-did not like Denham Springs at all. The people were so unfriendly and the homes were not that great. I like Ascension Parish area, but there are more Hispanics moving there now and God forbid, more non English speaking illegals! I love living in BR for one-it has so much for kids and yes, I do feel safe in most areas of Baton Rouge(those who live here know which areas to stay away from as in ANY city). The people here are great and we live in a friendly neighborhood, a little higher priced than we has hoped, but can manage. I have friend that live outside BR and mostlike the other areas, but wish they were in Baton Roge due to the commute, which they hate! I would chose Baton Rogue over any other city-but be prepared to have children go to private schools the public ones suck!

FloridaCpl, St. Francisville would be one of my firt choices if I had to live and work around there. So beautiful and rich with history. But that's just me. I'm most comfortable in small towns.

think i disagree
I think that Baton Rouge is just wonderful! I like it for one, because it is not the fastest growing area in the south. I would not want to live in a fast growing area personally! When we first moved here from south Florida, we found that the nicest people truly were in Baton Rouge. The most unfrienldy were in Mandeville area. I think that there is so very much for kids here in Baton Rouge! There are 4 indoor play places, Monkey Bizz, Chuck E cheese(2), hundreds of parks, BREC sporting events and a family water park, Blue Bayou. I know the outlying parsihes have fun stuff too, but I love it here in BR and enjoy the friendly life, the worst thing here is the public schools!! Never move here unless you can afford to put your kids in private school!
