Default Another one moving to Baton Rouge!

I have approximately 3 weeks to find an apartment in Baton Rouge.

Actually, I think I'm technically working in East Baton Rouge (Quail Dr. and Perkins Rd.). I'd prefer to find an apartment close to work for now (short term leasing options that accepts animals).

Any suggestions on specific apartment complexes or areas to look in / avoid?

You have a decent selection from that part of town. Mansions at the Park (Perkins past Kenilworth but before Essen) is nice. There are also apartments on Essen between the tracks and Summa. And as you go down Summa, you'll see several complexes. And there are apartments at One Perkins Place (behind the Spectrum Fitness Center at Perkins/Kenilworth) that seem OK.

I would avoid an "apartment city" that is at Perkins/Staring behind the Calendars - those apartments are kind of seedy.

There are many more apartments, of course, but those are nearby and don't involve a long commute.

That's generally a good area.

Mansions in the Park is right down the road on Perkins between Essen and Kenilworth. It's a pretty nice property. I know some people living there and they seem to like it.
There are several on Essen that don't appear to be bad, but I've never considered just because of traffic on Essen Lane. Cobblestone and Chateaux Dijon are on Essen.

There are some nice properties near Citiplace and Bocage (Jefferson Hwy at Corporate Blvd area of town). The Reserve at Cedar Lodge and the Millenium Towne Center are relatively new properties and there is another one being built in the area as well. They are gated and much more expensive than the usual properties. The drive from Bocage to Kenilworth can be made in less than 6 minutes when there is no traffic, so perhaps 20 minutes during rush hour.

There are some good properties on Bluebonnet as well, but certain areas of Bluebonnet become gridlock certain parts of the day. But honestly the same can be said about Bocage as well (especially around lunch and the evening rush hour).

There is construction going on south on Perkins between Essen and Siegen, expansion project. You'd probably do good avoiding that area at least until the construction is done.

Anything further northwest of Perkins towards LSU and you're talking mostly student properties. Some are pretty nice, but I don't know your take on student properties. Some people want to stay away from them.
Avoid the cheap rent around Gardere. They are cheap for a reason.

Traffic on Essen can be awful, but (1) It's pretty much awful in one direction - towards I-10 around noon and 4:30 PM, and (2) you can take the Summa or Picardy to get around all that. That's why I threw in those apartments as well.

Anyway, not trying to nitpick or anything; I just know there are ways around the Essen morass.

Thanks for all the info! I prob. should have mentioned it...but, after looking at online listing my big problem seems to be finding a place that will take my large dog.

Does the area have a business that helps people find apartments? Here in FL we have a business called Rent Finders that helps finding places (including homes for rent)...anything like that out there?

They usually have apartment guides at the grocery stores. Or you could do a google search on BR apartments.

I know a lot of places in Texas have such apartment guide companies, but I know of no such business here. The only thing I could suggest is try calling some of the bigger management companies here first. They tend to operate multiple properties, so they can tell you if they have certain properties that will allow for large animals, and some might be kind enough to advise a local competitor.
A.C. Lewis, Prime Properties, Wambold, R.W. Day* (mostly student properties) are some bigger management companies that I know of. I saw Brickstone is one that is building a new property here, but I don't know if they have other properties locally.
Apartment guides can be found at all the local outlets here. I don't know if they have one online that you can order like in Texas, but there are plenty of other online outlets that will give you a good idea. The only problem I've noticed with those and with the apartment guides is that you won't see any of the smaller properties that operate smaller units (like single building or duplex) and sometimes they offer the best rates and service.

Another question....I remember from a few months back something about not living near Florida Blvd. There seem to be many apartments in that area. What's the deal?

Yes. It's been around a while. And some of the apartments on that street are a bit dated and seedy.
