Baton Rouge Bound too
Neighborhood question
We are in the process of relocating to B.R. Have a budget up to about $350k for home, but of course would like to be below $300k. We would like to find a home with at least 4 br and a decent size yard.
We really don’t know much about the area and need advice.
I saw a house on the internet in the subdivision Broadmoor. Is this a good safe neighborhood for a family to bring up young kids in (ages 4 & 2)? Or should we look farther out like in Shenandoah or else where? Would we be better off looking at some of the newer constructed neighborhoods? My husbands office is off O’Neal and he really doesn’t want a long commute to and from work
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
I have heard many great things about B.R. and I am really looking forward to moving.

Broadmoor is an older neighborhood in BR. There are nice homes in the subdivision and I would say that it is a fairly safe neighborhood, but does not have a good public school (though this is the case for all public schools in baton rouge). If your husband is working off of O'neal, i would highly suggest looking into living in the town of Denham Springs (only about 5 miles east of O'neal). Denham is extremely safe and has a great public school system along with many new homes. Denham has really expanded in the last 10 years, with many people looking to get out of baton rouge. Shenandoah is another great family oriented neighborhoods, as is a lot of subdivisions in southeast B.R. Hope this is of some assistance to you and let me know if you have any other questions.

If you're living on O'Neal, there is plenty to choose from in Shenandoah down the road. I'm not crazy about Sherwood and Broadmoor. While they have large yards and decent square footage, (1) they're 50s/60s neighborhoods, (2) they're surrounded by apartments on three sides, and those apartments are slummy. So I see these neighborhoods as starting to decline. And the relocation of Womans Hospital to points further south won't help either.

Thanks.
I am not wild about Sherwood and would not consider it. I will check Denham Springs.
What about good Catholic Schools? What neighborhoods should I look at to be able to enroll my kids in one? My little girl will be in kindergarten next year.
Thanks Again for being so helpful!

If you want to live near Shenandoah, there are St Jean Vianney, St Patrick, and/or Most Blessed Sacrament.
Caution about Denham: the commute on I-12 is horrible and there always seems to be some kind of wreck on that road.

Welcome to Baton Rouge(soon)! My husband and I are raising our 5 year old daughter here and are very happy. We have been here 3 years now. The only negative things are traffic(everyone across the country says the same about their towns though)and some seedy people here since Katrina. I like BR and have heard other areas are nice outside of BR as well. I don't care for the other areas as well because everyone had the same idea to get more affordable housing and moved out then still have to come here to work and get mad about the commute-go figure! The weather here is great, the beach is only 4 hours away in Florida and the food is the best. There are so many things for children to do here I cannot even name them all. The water park Blue Bayou is a lot of fun in the summertime. I live in south BR and am close to about everything. let me know what else you need to know and I will try to help!

Thanks.
We are moving from Mobile, AL and the beach is one thing we will miss (only 40 minutes to Daulphin Island and hour to Gulf Shores).
I will be in BR in about 2 weeks (hubby is there during the week already in a hotel), we will drive around some more and look and different areas.
He personally wants to be more in the city due to work, social life & trying to make new friends.I prefer a new home with out having to do any improvements, he doesn't mind older one--LOL. I don't mind being on a short drive to some where like Denham but I guess we will just have to weigh all the options.
Thanks Again.

Also new to Baton Rouge
My wife and I also just moved to Baton Rouge and are looking for 4Br/3Ba houses for about $350k. We are looking around the Shenandoah area (Rose Hill, Laurel Hill, Green Trails) and we like what we see.
The area I would like some opinions on is about the area off of S. Harrells Ferry, specifically Shadows Lake subdivision (about a mile east of O'Neal on S. Harrells).
I lived in Baton Rouge for awhile about 8 years ago, but I was younger and single and not in the housing market, so I have only limited knowledge, plus things have changed a ton here obviously.
Looking forward to reading some replies, I've browsed about 25 pages of the Louisiana forum looking for BR housing information and it has been great. However I haven't seen much on this area off of O'Neal specifically.
Thanks...

Word of caution about the eastern fringe of the parish - you have some decaying apartments in the area. You have (1) low/reduced income apartments (St Jean) at approximately O'Neal and Harrells Ferry, and (2) the area at O'Neal/Harrell's Ferry has garden homes that aren't well kept up - oftentimes, I'll drive by and see garbage and other items in the front yards.
Plus, the traffic in that part of town is bad, because you have a few roads (Harrells Ferry, Coursey/George ONeal, Tiger Bend, Jones Creej) to handle all of the traffic.
Having said that, there are nice houses in White Oak and Green Trails (the new subdivision, right ?).
