Like I said, Wal-Mart. The place isn't the pitts, but now that you have competition in the Mexican restaurant arena (as opposed to 20 years ago, when it was Chi Chis, El Chico, and Mamacitas), Las Palmas is in the back of the pack in terms of food quality and service.

Actually, my absolute fave is Carlos Mexican Restaurant (Airline/Florida). It's supposedly closed, but I heard it's open a few nights/week.

Oh, I missed one: Mestizos (Acadian at I-10), which is owned by the son of the Carlos people. It's "Louisiana Mex" but is pretty good.

OMG lol remember Pancho's? I never went there, but oh, the stories I heard! A friend of mine took his wife there once and now whenever they're about to go somewhere, she almost always says, "We're not going to that horrible Pancho's place, are we?" And then he has to explain that it was shut down years ago. It left quite an impression.

What happened to Mamacitas? I liked that place the one time I went, though I was probably about eleven years old.

Anyone remember the little Mexican place on Staring Lane near Essen? It's been gone for 15 years or more. I think it's a dry cleaner's now. They had the best chile rellenos and really some decent food.

Was it a standalone or in the old A & P shopping center ? I'm afraid nothing is registering on that one.

(..Shiver...) Panchos was like a lead bomb in your stomach and makes Las Palmas seem like gourmet. They (Panchos) did have good sopapillas, though.

Mamacitas moved to Bluebonnet 10-15 years ago, then went kaput. They were OK, but were no match for the Superiors and Ninfas of the world.

Default Last word from me on Las Palmas.

I've eaten at Las Palmas enough times with friends, family and officers from State Police and they didn't seem to have a problem with it. So if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me.
Maybe I just have a tough stomach.

It was across the street from the A&P. Might have been almost directly across from Popeye's. For some reason the name Santa Fe is popping up.

I may be thinking of the wrong building, but for some reason, I thought that was a Jay's BBQ for years and years.

And let me attempt to be fair - I think the place is not the best, but other people I know like it. And several locations have sprouted around town. C'est la vie.
