Arrow Moving to BR (Attending LSU) - Need Advice

Hi

I am moving to Baton Rouge area in July for my Master's program at LSU and need housing advice.

I own a car and so I wouldn't mind staying away from the city and drive to LSU everyday.

I am considering the following areas (in order of preference):

1) Brusly
2) Addis
3) Denham Springs

I am planning to rent a decent small single home with all facilities. Safety is very important.

What are the prices for such homes in these areas and is there anything I need to know about these towns? Being a student, I would prefer a very cheap option.

Thanks

There isn't much to rent across the river and the apartments that do exist aren't in the best condition. Denham is a little far, although people drive it everyday. But unless you were staying with family over there, I wouldn't suggest it. The commute is terrible during rush hour and the gas is high. Do yourself a favor and stay around LSU. You'll be glad you did because you'll be close to everything. The towns and cities you listed are just suburban areas; they don't have any real identity to them. So if you're looking for a small town flavor, you'd do better with trying LATech in Ruston or NSU in Natchitoches. You won't find it in suburban BR.

There isn't much in the line of apartments in Brusly/Addis. But if you really had your heart set on those places I'm sure you could manage to locate a few affordable rental houses over there. Just don't expect many frills if you rent over that way. Denham Springs probably has more rental property inventory that you would be interested in, but, in my opinion, it isn't worth having to go back and forth between LSU and Denham Springs lol. Wishing you the best!

You might consider the Geismar or Prarieville areas. Geismar is very small and probably doesn't have any apartments but it would be peaceful and pretty safe. Prarieville would be a workable commute to LSU and is likely to have plenty to rent. The LSU area is pretty safe, by comparison, but can be somewhat noisy on Fri and Sat nights depending where you live. I would expect the same from any complex around LSU that houses a large number of students. It's a trade off, security for peace and quiet.
