Baton Rouge to Walker
My family moved to Baton Rouge last year from a military base in Texas. We lived in Texas for 10 years. My husband is from Lake Providence, LA. Not so appealing to live....but, when we would travel we would come to Baton Rouge and I fell in love with Baton Rouge. I loved the city and country life mixed. I convinced my husband to move here. It was easy to find a great paying job. I did experience some prejudice when I had assigments in Denham Springs but, just from a few people.....for the most part people were nice. The traffic is little hectic but, living around the world ....it can't be any worse than New York traffic. There are plenty places to shop and eat in Baton Rouge.
Now, the school systems is terrible. I have one child in gifted and one in child in regular courses at the same school......EBR school system needs improvement.
My question is : My husband wants to move to Walker, Louisiana. He feels our children will get a better education and less crime. My concern is prejudice. The home that we are considering in brand new....very nice and mixed community. But, I want to be able to enjoy my community -not worry about a redneck running me off the road. I am not being judgemental ....but, their are many rumors about Livingston Parish. Please give me the pros and cons on moving to Walker, Louisiana ( besides traffic).

Pros: (1) growth means you have lots of people with different viewpoints (2) Lots of new houses to choose from in an affrdable price range (3) Livingston Parish schools have a good reputation
Cons: (1) I-12 traffic is AWFUL (2) Livingston Parish (east of Walker, that is) is still very insular and rednecky

Just watch the I-12 traffic. It's VERY bad at Denham Springs because you have one interstate exit there. Though a second one is being built, it won't be done for a couple of years.

My parents did the same thing with my sister and I. We lived in Baton Rouge for a long time. When my sister was about to be going into Junior High, my parents decided to move, because BR schools are horrible. I have been in Walker since 2nd grade and I love it. It is growing and is definately getting better. I graduated with a good education, and I am now in college for my Bachelor of science in nursing. I believe that my parents did a great thing by moving us to Walker.
PS... It isn't as country as you think.

Positives
Thanks Runwayangel......Nice to here some positives. I just put down a large down payment on our house-At first I was kinda weary about the move. But, from talking to you and BRMAN...I'm excited. Oh yeah, I have alot of friends that are nurses if you need any help w/ your studies...hit me up on AOL.Take care and Happy New Year.
P.S. My realestate agent told me a mall is being built towards Walker...right when you pass the Denham Springs exit/just before the walker exit off of I-12.

I believe there is a large shopping development coming to that area. Malls are out, though, so don't expect to see many malls built in the United States from here on out. Last year only one mall opened in the United States, and that was in Jonesboro, AR.
The center you're referring to will be part of the newer national trend of "lifestyle centers," which are similar to malls but outdoors.

Livingston
Livingston Parish is abaout as redneck as redneck can get. I'd avoid it if I were you. The closer you can get to downtown Baton Rouge the better. The outlying areas, Livingston included, have a very racist, very sexist, good-ol-boy mentality.
