There are now Hispanics moving into town and you'd think it was the end of the world by the way people are talking.

Those types have little to no tolerance for anyone that isn't just like them...so I think they should feel encouraged to leave town. I'd hate to break it to them, but the city they are looking for doesn't exist. Bias and prejudice is a two way street, and the only way to live through it is to put up with the problem (as adults, we all have to have some level of tolerance) or move to an area full of people just like you.
While in Baton Rouge in 2001, a car full of young men roll by and yelled out the "Die N- word , Die N-word" ,this is 2001 not 1801 or even 1921...
Unacceptable...dealt with this all my life in B.R.
I dont hate anyone, im very accepting when it comes to others.
Just got tired of have to Pardon myself or others who look like me. for jsut being different..
I've also been very impressed with the divereisty with in the my race in D.C.
I now have a True sense of community, i feel like i mater and i belong.
No disrespect to anyone who loves B.R., but tolerence doesn't always live in BR

Having listened to you in recent posts, it appears now that you're just being egotistical. You made your point. I hope you weren't this ugly why you were in BTR because then I can understand why you may have felt like an outsider. People don't like whiners.
I honestly do hope you like D.C. better. I don't doubt it. But if you're not contributing to anything here, then leave BTR alone. Like you said, you've been out for the past five years. (or maybe you didn't say 5 years, i thought i read it somewhere, but what difference does it make anyway.) Why the bitterness now...
Not bitter ,just a debate. My desire with my original post was to evoke a response and it did.
Now let us continue.
Hopfully someone who use to live in BR may chime in soon .
PS. there are days I miss BR. but only when it's football season..BLACK COLLEGE FOOTBALL is not as big of an attraction as it is in the south.
Howard and Hampton have football but S.U. has the Jaguar NAtion.
I do miss some off the hip hop, bounce and jigg music , but it gets plenty of play everywhere now.
Family is in BR. but email and cell phones keep us connected.
Where can i find good Pecan candy?

In D.C. or BTR? Try Bernard's Pralines. They have online order.
I'm going home for the day. Y'all have fun with the debate.

Baton Rouge has a little bit of Livingston Parish in it....but to be fair, North Baton Rouge has a bit of New Orleans in it too.

Reverent Wright is preaching hatred in Chicago.
Ray Nagin proclaimed that New Orleans was the chocolate city.
Matthew Shepard was beaten to death in Colorado.
Native Africans are getting killed by immigrant middle easterners in Darfur.
Protestants and Catholics have been fighting for a long time in Ireland.
There are millions of Islamic fundamentalist that are itching to cleanse America because of Christians, Jews, Homosexuals, and our fat pocketbooks.

What's your point? You think that bigots and stupidity doesn't exist in Washington DC? Are politicians less crooked? Is the city cleaner?
Because if you think that, then you are going to be let down.

I'm not saying you wouldn't like it in DC...but moving across the country to escape something that exist everywhere is kind of silly.

Take it from someone who has lived north of the Mason Dixon line. Yankees hate just as much as everyone else does. You'll learn that...but to top it off, the job market is worse, people are more arrogant, and winter weather sucks. The whole eastern seaboard smells...true story.

Hell B-ham even has a better skyline....lol
FYI Birmingham sucks for a city of 1.1 million. Their skyline is very depressing and not anything to brag about for an urban area with that population. The things you measure a city's "livability" with, are all dependent on population, something both Birmingham and DC have alot more of than BTR.

If Washington if full of crooked politcs, remember a democratic process got them there.

I still have a greater sense of community , though it maybe be "smelly, and arrogant" but the Job market here is much better. Do some research.

Dont know if you knew this, but D.C. is below the Mason Dixon line( MD and PA border).

PS. Does the East Coast smell like north baton rouge,on scenic highway? you , near exxon...
what do they make there Frebreeze?
lol.

MODERATOR:

I usually post in red, but it looks like that color is taken.

I am failing to see the point beyond the initial post - this thread has turned into a comparison between Birmingham, DC and BR. Last time I checked, only one of these was in Louisiana, and this is the Louisiana forum. I can't see what possible bearing DC or Birmingham has on quality of life in Baton Rouge - we're debating cities and not expressing why BATON ROUGE is or is not a place to relocate to. Running what amounts to a poll on the best place to live is not for the Louisiana forum, that would be for the General U.S. forum.

Having said all that, it's okay to state why you moved and discuss those particular issues, but comparisons aren't helping anyone unless they are considering moving to D.C. or Birmingham versus Baton Rouge. If this thread continues along the same lines, it will be moved to General U.S. and the debate can continue...but let's back off on the attacks against any one area. Where one lives is home, and anyone would be expected to be a little offended by overt criticism of that area.

Thank you.
