Default studying in LSU

Hi

I realise that there may have been similar threads to this one but having trouble finding some info.
I have a provisional placement at LSU starting in august 2009 to study for 1 year there. I am really excited as i think it will be a great expirence.
Yet i have heard mixed reviews on the crime status - eg: my dad seems to think it is really really bad whereas people on here do not think it is as bad as some are making out.
Any adivce please....? and tips for the area....?

Also anyone bin to LSU to tell me what its like??

cheers

LSU has crime, but it's more an issue of knowing where to go and not to go - the northern border of LSU is near the slums. So I'd look for housing south of LSU along Burbank, Highland between the south gates and Lee, Brightside, and Nicholson.

I enjoyed my time at LSU. It's a big school, which is good and bad. Good in that there are social opportunities, bad in that you have to seek them out sometimes because you don't always know your classmates.

Are you coming as a student, grad student, or employee ? You can PM me on the side.

I attended LSU over a period of six years and never had any problems. I never lived on campus though. I started at home and ended up in an apartment/condo off of Brightside. I had many friends who did live on campus and they seemed to never have problems. Of course this is all 10 years ago now. The area north of campus, the North Gates, has changed somewhat since my days. There are new hangouts, some of the closest slum looking areas have been demolished and new apartments have been built. There's also more open space. Immediately south of campus really hasn't changed a whole lot at all. New apartment complexs sure, but the same old ones as well. I never felt threatened on campus, but I didn't spend a whole lot of time at Middleton in the middle of the night either. LSU's biggest problem has been a lack in lighting. Some areas are nicely lit now, but there are still plenty of dark areas. I'd always suggest walking with someone else at night. I still think you're more likely to get accosted or experience a break-in in Tigerland (south of campus) or at a convenience store north of campus than on campus.
