Places to live
I need some advice. My job has offered to transfer me to Baton Rouge or not have a job.So i guess i need to move. I am from the west coast and have no idea where to look or not to look for a home. The job is on Siegan Lane. I would like to be close until i figure out where i am. I wont be able to afford a lot of rent at first ,since my husband will have to find a job. Can someone give me some advice? I would rather rent a small home with a garage over a apartment. We do have a small dog. 900.00 a month would make it comfortable. Help? Thanks in advance

If you're on Siegen, you have a lot of choices. There are townhomes/apartments on Siegen near Highland. There is also Oakbrook on Perkins near Siegen. And on Siegen near Airline (near the TJ Ribs) there are nice new apartments being built. And Cypress Lake apartments are on Rieger Road (service road which intersects Siegen near I-10) are pretty nice. There are also apartments on Siegen I'd not waste time on. (I think it's called) Meadowbrook on Siegen between the railroad tracks and Perkins are slummy and flood. And I think the apartments on Siegen next to Academy are low income.
I'm only mentioning Siegen apartments because the traffic on Siegen alone can be nasty. And on Bluebonnet, it's getting pretty bad traffic-wise. So I'm starting you off by narrowing your search.

I agree(once again) with BR Man. You may even find a decent home for rent in that price range off of Jefferson Hwy in a neighborhood called Westminster. Apartment wise-I have to agree with BR man, some can be kinda slummy, but they just built some new ones off of Siegen Lane and I cannot think of the name, the Apartment Finder magazine can also help-good luck!

Yeah, like BRMan said, there are a lot of small homes, mostly rental homes too, in that area near Siegen/Highland (Potwin Dr - Amiss Rd). I know some older college (graduate student) and young professional type people living in that area. Seems relatively quite back there, and clean.
There is also Oakleigh apartments on Perkins, which aren't bad and not far, worst case if you have to go for an apartment. There are plenty of apartments on Jefferson and the area around OLOL-Essen Lane.

I am suprised by the lack of information on the city or rentals. Maybe Arizona is just different and it isnt fair to compare. Do you know of any web sites that actually have home rentals? Thanks for your help

If you're looking for a house to rent, try looking on craigslist or in the classified section of the paper ( 2theadvocate.com | Powered by The Advocate and WBRZ News 2 Louisiana — Baton Rouge, LA). Unfortunately, I haven't found a website with searchable listings of houses for rent.
In my experience, a garage is going to be hard to come by in the $900 range. We currently pay $900 for a 2br/1ba duplex with a driveway big enough for only one car. My husband parks on the street. You should be able to find something less expensive if you're willing to compromise on looks/neighborhood though.

At Seigen Lane and Lazy K ave., there are townhouses for rent for about 850. They look decent and I had friends in one of them many years ago with no complaints but I would check them out carefully. The ad I saw said to contact Realty Management Services 925-3330. I believe these are the townhomes close to Highland mentioned above.

How Far?
thanks for the replies. Let me ask it this way? How far out would i have to be to find that small house with a garage under 1000.00? Which way to look to be in a decent neighborhood. Or which way to not be in crazy traffic. We have several motorcycles and i think my husband idea is to rent a garage with a house attached

there are a few newer apts. in that part of baton rouge that have apartments that include the option to rent a single car garage. Dont rule the townhouses / apts out. Several are also behind gated entrances which is nice in that part of town.
