You know if you like small towns, St Francisville is a little further up the road on US 61 and has a good school system because a nuclear power plant pays the property taxes.

Oh okay gotcha and thanks for the IMO translation. I must say I love older homes (it does look like there are many beautiful mature areas in BR) to look at and visit but I am most comfortable living in new... spoiled suburban rat I suppose. What is your opinion of the Green Trails area?

Interesting area - is located on what was the Shenandoah Country Club. Traffic to/from the airport will be awful, though.

Since you're more comfortable with new houses, I'd recommend Zachary with the caveat you won't have 100% of the retail you have in BR. But you'll get bettwe schools and your husband will get a good commute. If you don't mind the commute and the EBR schools, on the other hand, there are quite a few places in south BR I'd point you to.......

I want to say there are some suites off Corporate Blvd near College - your husbands's company may know as well.

Hey Beth O! We were in the same position two years ago. We loved Coppermill but there is NOTHING out there. I have to be able to get to Target, WM, and a Chick Fil A. With two small children it is a requirement to live close by to those!
We looked into GreenTrails. Lovely little section but a little over priced if you ask me. Our Realtor wanted us to buy in there for resale but we passed. We could not see spending $330,000 on a 2100 sq ft house. Mind you we were coming from Tx and we paid $160,000 for a 2200 sq ft home. Denham Springs was too far out and down south was alright but we just were not paying the prices they were demanding. It was VERY hard getting use to the idea that you have to drop $250,000 on a much older home that still needs updating.
We ended up purchasing in Martins Lake at Shadows Lake off of South Harrels Ferry before you get to White Oak. We purcahsed in the new section for resale value. We are hoping since our home is newer it will sell quicker than an older home in the other sections. Home prices range just on our street from low $300s up to mid $500s. We have a park area and a nice play area but no pool or anything. Kiddos everywhere now. Not so much when we first moved in. In just the past month though houses have been selling like wild fire. I think there are only abt 4 or five in all three sections which is a good thing for us!
Great neighborhhood and so convient to everything. My hubby travels to Exxon everyday and has learned backways so he rarely ever gets stuck in traffic. Interstate is a nightmare but that will be anywhere in this city at certain times of the day. I love that we have Target, WM and Chick Fil A and Lowes just down the road. I can also get to the other Traget in ten minutes over on Seigun...maybe 15. I live at Hobby Lobby and as fas as schools go St Andrews Preshool has been wonderful for my boys 5 and 3. They love it! We purcahsed because of schools. We are right by Runnels and then St Jean is down the Road as well. If you want public then buy in Shanendoah. That is suppose to be the best school around! We would have purchased there even though the homes are older and nned some TLC if we knew for sure we were staying here. We figured we were not so we purchased new.
Anyways, happy house hunting! We are right there with ya next month!

Thx Txgal! A fellow toddler mom, yea! I am a bit worried about the "nothingness" of Zachary and the commute to Shenandoah but know we will find our corner of happy someplace in between! My husband is there this week and will scope it out. I appreciate your feedback. Maybe as a welcome gift you can share the back roads commute secret - ha! As a side note, doesn't Target have us moms brainwashed, it was the first place I looked up!

As in retail (and the like) out there ? It has some, but is a more spread out area than Zachary. And while you do have the advantage of a direct route to the airport (Hooper Road), you're also competing with Livingston Parish traffic during the commute.

Having more than one Target to shop is super sweet! We live at Target and Hobby Lobby! I love that they are just down the road. The boys even love going and hubby says I broke them! I have a 5 yr old and a 3 yr old. They both attend St Andrews and love it. We were lucky to find a great preschool when we moved here. Very kid friendly area. I must say though Baton Rouge in itself to me is kinda boring. Not much to do but I guess it is all in what you like to do.
Our friends who are from the area make fun of us because we can not wait to get back to Houston because we call it home and they can not wait to get back here!
Well good luck and I will ask my hubby when roads he would take to get around the traffic issue.
