Ok - I didn't read everything that has been posted so no one go ape sh*t if I'm repeating or rehashing anything.
As an LSU grad student who doesn't want to live around a whole bunch of student you should either live in the Garden District or in between I-10 and Webb Golf Course. Stay away from the first few blocks north of I-10 there though.
The Garden is close to some bad areas but I lived there for a year and never had any problems.
Don't live north of LSU. Don't live in Gardere. And yes, everything north of Florida Blvd. will be a culture shock to someone from Wisconsin.
Just live in the Garden, its classic Louisiana. You will love it.

alright, after searching for days and days (house shopping is exhausting!) i decided on a townhome in aubin...which just so happened to be the first place i visited...i should have just stopped after that one and enjoyed the rest of my week. i found out that i had an accepted offer just last night! so yay for that.
as for the city...in all of the areas suggested on here, and a few i found on my own, i felt completely safe. i know i was only here for a week, (and tried to stay in the 'safer' places) but it seems like BR has gotten quite the bad reputation for nothing. I can't wait to move here!!!! 6 more weeks!
thank you again and again for all of your advice!
