Garden District?
Relocating from Los Angeles to Baton Rouge and in the movie business. I'm looking for an area that's a little more urban feeling. Originally from Chicago and have heard the garden district is the closest thing to a Chicago/urban feel.

The Garden District is nice but something a little closer to the downtown area is Spanish Town. It is quite an interesting place. There are some really beautiful homes, plenty of apartments and other rental property. You are in the shadow of the State Capital Building.
There are also some nice condos being built in some of the old downtown buildings. The downtown area is really starting to come to life so there seems to be a lot of stuff happening.
Beauregard Town is also another place close to downtown. Not real sure about this area though.

I've been to Chicago a time or two. I'd have to agree, I think the Garden District is about as close of a feel to some of the northern suburbs of Chicago as we get here, and that's not saying a lot. It is a nice area though. It's just not Chicago. You are relatively close to everything though: City Park, downtown, midcity, LSU.

Thanks,
All this is very helpful, really looking forward to the move. I think it will be a nice change from Los Angeles.

Much greener, that's for sure. And more wet, except for our current dry pattern.
The residents of the Garden District are really nice and friendly for the most part, fairly open, and very community minded.

Some of the " fringe " areas have a higher incidence of crime . Ask around . Find out which part of the Garden District is the most secure .

You make a good point. The area around Lavinia/Jura is a little questionable. Also, Park is considered decent but that is the absolute limit. Break ins are more common the closer you get to Park.

I would say the closer you get to Government/Park/Lavinia, the greater the odds of being on a "fringe" - personally, If I HAD to live in a Garden District neighborhood, I'd either (1) get a house in Southdowns, (2) Cross Acadian and look at Capital Heights and/or Hundred Oaks.

Lived in the Garden for a little while with my g/f while she was at LSU.
She lived on Park and we never had any problems. It is close to some sketchy areas and there is a little foot traffic but other than that you will be fine. Lock up and don't leave anything valuable in your car... basically the same thing you should do anywhere.
The Garden District is my favorite neighborhood in Baton Rouge. It looks like Louisiana. Awesome place.
Try Spanish Town for the more urban feel. Can't give much more advice about it though cause I have never lived there.
Good luck
